The Butler from Another Planet….

The Butler

By Michael Reagan | Aug 22, 2013 | Townhall.com

There you go again, Hollywood.

You’ve taken a great story about a real person and real events and twisted it into a bunch of lies.

You took the true story of Eugene Allen, the White House butler who served eight presidents from 1952 to 1986, and turned it into a clichéd “message movie.”

“Lee Daniels’ The Butler’” stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, a fictional character supposedly based on Eugene Allen’s real life.

But let’s compare the two White House butlers.

Guess which one grew up in segregated Virginia, got a job at the White House and rose to become maître d’hôtel, the highest position in White House service?

Guess which one had a happy, quiet life and was married to the same woman for 65 years? And who had one son who served honorably in Vietnam and never made a peep of protest through the pre- and post-civil rights era?

Now guess which butler grew up on a Georgia farm, watched the boss rape his mother and then, when his father protested the rape, watched the boss put a bullet through his father’s head?

Guess which butler feels the pain of America’s racial injustices so deeply that he quits his White House job and joins his son in a protest movement?

And guess which butler has a wife (Oprah Winfrey) who becomes an alcoholic and has a cheap affair with the guy next door? (I’m surprised it wasn’t the vice president.)

After comparing Hollywood’s absurd version of Eugene Allen’s life story with the truth, you wonder why the producers didn’t just call it “The Butler from Another Planet.”

Screenwriter Danny Strong says he was trying to present a “backstage kind of view of the White House” that portrayed presidents and first ladies as they really were in everyday life.

Well, I was backstage at the White House -- a few hundred times. I met and knew the real butler, Mr. Allen, and I knew a little about my father.

Portraying Ronald Reagan as a racist because he was in favor of lifting economic sanctions against South Africa is simplistic and dishonest.

If you knew my father, you’d know he was the last person on Earth you would call a racist.

If Strong had gotten his “facts” from the Reagan biographies, he’d have learned that when my father was playing football at Eureka College one of his best friends was a black teammate.

Strong also would have learned that my father invited black players home for dinner and once, when two players were not allowed to stay in the local hotel, he invited them to stay overnight at his house.

Screenwriter Strong also might have found out that when my father was governor of California he appointed more blacks to positions of power than any of predecessors -- combined.

It’s appalling to me that someone is trying to imply my father was a racist. He and Nancy and the rest of the Reagan family treated Mr. Allen with the utmost respect.

It was Nancy Reagan who invited the butler to dinner – not to work but as guest. And it was my father who promoted Mr. Allen to maître d’hôtel.

The real story of the White House butler doesn’t imply racism at all. It’s simply Hollywood liberals wanting to believe something about my father that was never there.

My father’s position on lifting the South African sanctions in the ‘80s had nothing to do with the narrow issue of race. It had to do with the geopolitics of the Cold War.

But facts don’t matter to Hollywood’s creative propagandists. Truth is too complicated and not dramatic enough for scriptwriters, who think in minute terms, not the big picture, when it comes to a conservative.

Despite what Hollywood’s liberal hacks believe, my father didn’t see people in colors. He saw them as individual Americans. If the liberals in Hollywood -- and Washington -- ever start looking at people the way he did, the country will be a lot better off.

The Butler (Kindle) is (would be) a terrific story that deserves to be told. Too bad it wasn’t told by honest people without political agendas who felt it necessary to use a traitor to portray one of our most beloved first ladies (insulting Vietnam Vets of all colors) and to distort much of history. Perhaps reading Wes Haygood’s book The Butler: A Witness to History would be a better option!?!  Or at least wait until the movie comes to (free) TV, if you watch it knowing the slant and bias the movie is based on.

WALL STREET JOURNAL: GBTV ALREADY HAS MORE SUBSCRIBERS THAN OPRAH’S NETWORK HAS VIEWERS

Many people thought Glenn Beck might have been a little bit crazy (little bit?) to leave the safety and support of traditional cable television to launch his internet-based GBTV enterprise.  But the news from the Wall Street Journal today may cause even the critics some pause.

Beck’s GBTV broadcast will launch at 5PM ET this afternoon, complete with an all-new chalkboard!

Video:  '>'Say Hello to My Little Friend

The complete Wall Street Journal article, well worth reading, is restricted to subscribers, but here is one nugget :

Because Mr. Beck owns the show and the network, he could make substantially more than the $2.5 million salary he got each year at Fox. GBTV is on track to take in more than $20 million in revenue in its debut year, according to a person close to the company.

The television industry will be watching closely to see whether the TV host can preserve his popularity while migrating to the Web, where efforts to get consumers to pay to watch online-only channels are just beginning.

When Mr. Beck announced GBTV in June, the network had 80,000 subscribers. In the months since, GBTV subscribers have swelled to more than 230,000, according to people close to the network, even though Mr. Beck‘s show hasn’t yet begun.

The audience is far less than the more than 2.2 million daily viewers his program on Fox drew, on average, over its 27-month run, which ended in June after clashes with the network’s management.

But it is more than the average 156,000 people who were watching the Oprah Winfrey Network in June.

One writer at Forbes has looked at the numbers and done a little extrapolation:

Analyst Rich Greenfield of BTIG Research estimates that GBTV is already generating revenues of $27 million a year from subscription fees by monetizing a mere 1 percent of the total audience for his Fox show, his radio show, his websites (glennbeck.com and theblaze.com) and other outlets. Greenfield envisions Beck increasing that conversion rate to 5 percent, yielding a subscriber base of over 1 million. In that scenario, extrapolating from Greenfield’s current run rate estimate of $27 million, GBTV would be generating $135 million in subscription revenues.

The Forbes writer, Jeff Bercovici, acknowledges that those estimates might be optimistic.  But he posits that Beck is on course to the $100 million dollar earnings barrier “sooner than later” when you consider all of his media endeavors.

Deadline New York is running with a headline reading, “Analyst: Media Execs ‘Should Be Very Afraid’ of Glenn Beck’s Web TV Launch.”

Mediate looks at it this way:

While Beck’s online venture is still relatively new, it’ll continue to be interesting to observe the different trajectories GBTV and OWN take as they forge their way. Here are two networks, albeit on different platforms, begun by two individuals who are themselves highly recognizable mega-brands. One is gradually building an audience as another is still hoping to find its place on television, and both depend highly on the trust viewers place on their respective founding personalities. Could you imagine what an episode devoted to Beck’s “favorite things” might pan out? Sales of chalk could go through the roof.

Christmas With the Obamas

Many watched Oprah’s Special on ABC, billed as Christmas in the White House. Many were disappointed because it was really a combination attempt to present a false front by the Obama’s through their friend Oprah to placate the 80+ percent of Americans who are Christians and the others who love the Christmas traditions because they are part of the American experience.

Oprah begins her show with the President in the Oval Office where they look at one of the Christmas Trees that surprisingly, like the cookies at the White House Christmas Party, was filled with ACORNS… Hmmmm… a secret (or not so secret) message??

We met Beau the dog wearing a Christmas Bell collar; saw how the White House Gingerbread house is made; saw the decoupage ornaments and cranberries in the red room and discussed how many of the framed photos in the White House were swapped out for holiday photos from former administrations. There were tree lighting and Menorah lighting ceremonies this year, but the spectacular White House Nativity Scene, that was almost not put up this year, was nowhere to be seen and the White House is sending out Holiday Cards… not Christmas Cards.

It was reported in the pro-Obama The New York Times that the President Obama and the First Family were planning a “non-religious Christmas,” according to Social Secretary Desiree Rogers. Ms. Rogers reportedly told a gathering of former social secretaries that the Obamas did not intend on putting the Nativity scene on display – a longtime East Room tradition. (Now does this in anyway make sense to anyone, if the Obama's were Christians, even on practicing Christians... or apathetic Agnostics??... Of course it doesn't!!).

The account was reported in the Fashion and Style section of The New York Times. The White House confirmed to the Times that there had been internal discussions about making Christmas more inclusive – but in the end – tradition won out – and the Nativity scene is once again in its traditional East Room spot.

Later after many complaints and negative press, Michelle Obama said, “It has been a part of White House Christmas decorations in the past, it is on display in the East Room for all to enjoy and it will continue to be a part of White House Christmas decorations moving forward.”

There was a discussion between Oprah and Obama about the President spending his first 10-minutes in the Oval Office alone and mention of a prayer, but no other references to prayer or the reason for Christmas were made. Odd for a president to sold himself to the American People as a Christian; just as it is odd for a Christian President not to attend or even find a church in DC for himself or his family. Church and prayer sustain most presidents during the difficult times in the White House.

The most time spent on “Christ” mas discussion on Oprah Winfrey's Christmas special from the White House was where she sits down with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle in the Green Room and they the Obama’s quibble about bad Christmas gifts.

In this clip (below) of Oprah Winfrey's Christmas special from the White House where she sits down with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle and they quibble over bad Christmas Gifts. President Obama just comes right out and says - in front of Michelle:

"Here's the general rule: I give nicer stuff than I get." Michelle responds, "No way! I gave you good gifts last year." Obama then says, Ahhhh, come on. Please!" And finally Michelle ends with, “You do give good gifts… Keep it up~”

After ‘the gift exchange’ when Oprah asked about family Christmas traditions, new and old, the Obama’s mentioned that they would be heading to Hawaii to celebrate.

“Unlike almost all Americans—including atheists—the Obamas do not give their children Christmas gifts. We know this because Barack bragged about this last year to People magazine. So it should come as no big surprise that he and his wife would like to neuter Christmas in the White House. That’s their natural step—to ban the public display of Christian symbols. Have any doubts? Last April, Georgetown University was ordered to put a drape over the name of Jesus as a condition of the president speaking there. Obama said that Santa brings the girls and all of them gifts, but there was no mention of any true Christmas celebrations or traditions in the Obama home of family. (Even when their yearly ‘Christmas’ trip to Hawaii was mentioned, the discussion revolved around a talent contest… not church, prayer or even traditional gift giving.) Even Oprah, who has been pushing new age types of religion made an odd comment on the special. “I thought that (referring to a pearl necklace Michelle was wearing) had to be something more special than just Christmas. Hmmm for Christians there are no more important days that Christmas and Easter.

If the Obamas want to deprive their children of celebrating Christmas, that is their business. It is the business of the public to hold them accountable for the way they celebrate Christmas in the White House. We know one thing for sure: no other administration ever entertained internal discussions on whether to display a nativity scene in the White House.”

At the end of the program Oprah asked what wish the President would leave on the the White House’s Wish Tree for the American People. He replied, “I would wish for confidence by the American People that everything will be alright.” Mr. President, if that is true… you are living far outside of the reality bubble…

And as far as church goes perhaps it is not a priority if you don’t want the American people to know your real religion?!?

obama-in-mosque Obama taking off his shoes and getting ready to worship with other Muslim men; not something a non-Muslim and especially a non-Muslim US President would do…

----------------

Obama leaves the gifting to Santa

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) tells People magazine in the issue out Friday that he and his wife, Michelle, do not give Christmas or birthday presents to their two young daughters.

Obama tells the magazine’s Sandra Sobieraj Westfall in a seven-page cover story that he and his wife follow the unusual practice because they “want to teach some limits.”

In the interview earlier this summer, Obama noted that they do spend “hundreds” of dollars on birthday slumber parties.

Michelle Obama told People: “Malia says, ‘I know there is a Santa because there’s no way you’d buy me all that stuff.’ ”

Wink.

The cover says: “THE OBAMAS AT HOME – EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS! – From piano practice and pillow talk to who does the chores (not him!), Barack, Michelle and daughters Sasha [7] and Malia [10] offer a rare look into their Chicago home.”

Westfall writes: “The girls may be irreverent, but they are also well mannered, slipping off their shoes before climbing on the velvet sofa. ‘There are downstairs rules,’ Michelle says later, like

no shoes on the furniture. But in the girls’ third-floor playroom the couch doubles as a trampoline. ‘So there are different rules in different parts of the house,’ Michelle continues.

“In the kitchen, where it’s the girls’ job to set and clear the dinner table, sunlight streams through a solarium-style glass wall, showing off black granite countertops—and dust collecting on an unopened bottle of Kendall- Jackson chardonnay. Michelle’s 71-year-old mother, Marian Robinson, is unpacking the family’s takeout lunch from Subway."

Here are the seven “Obama House Rules” listed by the magazine:

1) “No whining, arguing or annoying teasing,” says Michelle Obama.

2) Make the bed. “Doesn’t have to look good—just throw the sheet over it,” says Mom.

3) Set your own alarm clock. “They get themselves up, get their own clothes,” says Sasha and Malia’s grandmother Marian Robinson. “They’re very easy to take care of; there’s not much left for me to do!”

4) Keep playroom toy closet clean.

5) Allowance from Dad for doing chores: $1 per week. “I’m out of town all the time,” says Barack, “so Malia will say, ‘Hey, you owe me 10 weeks!’ ”

6) No birthday or Christmas presents from Mom and Dad, who spend “hundreds” on birthday slumber parties and, as Barack puts it, “want to teach some limits.” Says Michelle: “Malia says, ‘I know there is a Santa because there’s no way you’d buy me all that stuff.’ ”

7) Lights out at 8:30. “They got an extra half hour when they were ready to read on their own,” says Michelle.

I would say that this system of Christmas keeps them from addressing the actual holiday and meaning behind it; keeps them out of church, and keeps the Obama’s out of explaining their Muslim leanings. Santa is more of a children’s cult figure and really has nothing to do with the true meaning of “Christ”mas or the religious based traditions. (It is kind of like Jews who put up a Hanukah Bush/Tree and have Santa bring presents, so their kids don’t feel left out. This is just the Obama Muslim version).

The question for America is, “When are you going to be tired of being had and lied to?? And are you going to stand-up before there is nothing left to stand up for or after they have taken your freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion and the right to bear arms away from you… so that there is no way to fight back??

Merry Christmas and May God Bless and Keep America and her (His) People Safe!!

For Thrillers, Glenn Beck Is Becoming New Oprah

Virtually every novelist in America fantasizes about being picked to appear on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. But now an increasing number of writers have discovered a new champion: Glenn Beck, the outspoken media darling of populist conservatism.

James Rollins discussing “The Doomsday Key” on July 6.

On his radio show and cable television programs, first on CNN Headline News and now on the Fox News Channel, Mr. Beck has enthusiastically endorsed dozens of novelists, a majority of them writing in the thriller genre. Mr. Beck, who now attracts 9 million weekly listeners on radio and 2.7 million daily viewers on television, often selects authors whose plots or characters reflect political stances that mirror his own. But he also promotes the work of authors who may disagree with many of his views.

“He’s our Oprah,” said Brad Thor, a writer of political thrillers who has appeared on Mr. Beck’s radio and television programs several times. “God love him, we’re very fortunate.”

At a time when the book industry is struggling to maintain, much less increase, sales, publishers and authors say an appearance on Mr. Beck’s television or radio programs helps attract new readers. After James Rollins, the author of “The Doomsday Key,” a thriller about a group of Defense Department scientists trying to solve an ancient mystery, appeared this past summer on Mr. Beck’s radio program and then his television show — on which Mr. Beck promised viewers “it will keep you on the edge of your seat — Mr. Rollins met several people at a book signing who told him they had bought the book based on that recommendation, he said.

According to Seale Ballenger, a publicist for William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins that released “The Doomsday Key,” the novel remained in the Top 10 of the New York Times hardcover fiction best-seller list longer than typical for its type. “It was totally driven by Glenn Beck,” Mr. Ballenger said.

In the past five years Mr. Beck, who was a best-selling novelist with “The Christmas Sweater” last year and just released as a children’s book The Christmas Sweater: A Picture Book, has interviewed about 40 thriller writers, including David Baldacci, Nelson DeMille and James Patterson, on his radio program, his cable television shows or both.

While his focus is thrillers, Mr. Beck stands out among talk show hosts in that he regularly interviews authors who write fiction at all. “I think it’s an aspect of the show that maybe has flown under the radar because of some of the more controversial things that have taken place on the air,” said Daniel Silva, an author of spy thrillers. Mr. Beck, Mr. Silva said, “has provided a really unique venue for novelists to come and talk about their work on television.”

Morning shows like “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America” used to have regular book clubs devoted in part to promoting up-and-coming authors, but now there are fewer slots for novelists, most reserved for heavy hitters like John Irving or Patricia Cornwell.

While Craig Ferguson’s (also a recent author of American on Purpose) “Late Late Show” and “Sunday Morning,” both on CBS, do feature authors — including novelists — from time to time, Mr. Beck may be the most passionate national media advocate for fiction, albeit in a particular genre.

“I don’t think there’s anybody else on TV that is either that eager or open to booking novelists,” said David Brown, deputy director for publicity at Atria, an imprint of Simon & Schuster that publishes Mr. Thor and Vince Flynn, another thriller writer who has appeared frequently on Mr. Beck’s programs.

Kevin Balfe, senior vice president for publishing at Mercury Radio Arts, Mr. Beck’s production company, said Mr. Beck was a voracious reader who loved to read thrillers at night.

“Glenn is a regular guy, and regular Americans like thrillers,” said Mr. Balfe, an editor of Mr. Beck’s current nonfiction best seller, “Arguing With Idiots.”

Mr. Beck regularly tweets brief reviews of his favorite books. “Just finished Vince Flynn’s new book. BEST YET,” he wrote last month. He also promotes authors on his Web site, GlennBeck.com, and in his e-mail newsletter. In his print magazine, Fusion, he is running a serial novel for which nearly 30 thriller writers, including Mr. Patterson, Christopher Reich and Harlan Coben, have contributed chapters.

Now Mr. Beck, who through a spokesman declined to comment, has written his own thriller, an untitled work to be published this spring by Threshold, the conservative imprint of Simon & Schuster.

When Mr. Beck interviews authors, he gives brief endorsements of the novels, but then tends to pick out a few issues — often relating to current events — to discuss. Authors welcome the chance to talk about the meat of their books.

“He doesn’t have me on to talk about the great sex scene in Chapter 34,” said Brad Meltzer, a thriller writer who extensively researches his novels. “He has me on to talk about the great access I’ve had to former presidents and the research that I do.”

Photographs by Jan Cobb

Other authors who have been guests on Glenn Beck's radio and television shows include Andrew Gross, left, and Brad Thor.

Mr. Beck is quite canny about using novels as a vehicle for talking about issues he cares about. When Mr. Flynn was on Mr. Beck’s Fox News program last month to talk about “Pursuit of Honor,” Mr. Flynn’s latest novel, a thriller about a C.I.A. operative chasing Muslim terrorists who kill 185 people in Washington, Mr. Beck zeroed in on a chapter in which the main character, Mitch Rapp, goes before Congress to defend the C.I.A.’s record of using harsh interrogation tactics with suspects.

“Let me just say, it’s almost conservative porn,” Mr. Beck said.

He also engages with writers whose books may reflect political views divergent from his own. In a recent radio interview with Andrew Gross, the author of thrillers set among the wealthy families of Greenwich, Conn., Mr. Beck and the author talked about Mr. Gross’s latest novel, “Don't Look Twice,” which features a plot twist involving political profiteering in Iraq.

“You’re on the liberal side of things, which is, you know, fine,” Mr. Beck said to Mr. Gross, before telling listeners that the book was “riveting.”

In a telephone interview Mr. Gross, who said Mr. Beck’s politics “don’t sit entirely well with me,” said he has been attacked by both conservatives and liberals for appearing on Mr. Beck’s show.

“I’ll get people who are obviously fans of his who write me e-mails, saying, ‘I paid $27 for this, and I didn’t want to buy a bunch of lefty” garbage, Mr. Gross said, using a term not appropriate for a family newspaper. “And then I get calls from people on the left who say, ‘I’ve always liked your books but now that I see you have an association with Glenn Beck, I’m reconsidering.’ ”

Mr. Gross said he defended himself to both sides. “Invariably, I’ve had people who said, ‘I wasn’t going to read it because I saw it was endorsed by Glenn Beck,’ ” he said. “And I’ve pushed them to hold their judgment. And several of them have written back and said, ‘I take it back.’ ”

Glenn Beck is very well read!! He also has his finger on the pulse of what America wants and likes. I always have to laugh at the people who accuse Glenn of not being educated. Glenn, like Abraham Lincoln and many others is self-educated. Reading because you want to, not because it is assigned is one of the best educations. (add that to experience and travelling and you have the best education you can get!) Glenn also suffers from ADHD, which gives him amazing energy and he seems to require little sleep, so he can devour and write a lot of books.

Oprah, although certainly still a major force, has lost popularity and credibility over the past 18 months because of her choices in several areas.

Except for the die hard Kool-Aid-Drinkers or uninformed followers thereof, who are brain-washed, those who demonize Glenn Beck or the people that go on his show only show their own lack of awareness.

You can like Glenn Beck’s opinions or not, but if you are a fair person you must admit that he back sup all the information he airs with facts; most on video or from quotes from speeches, interviews and books from the subjects themselves or the most credible of sources and witnesses.

Most people who do not like Beck, either have never watched, read, or listened to him themselves and are running on falsehoods spread by opponents and radical left thinkers or if asked have no actual idea or justification of why they don’t like him. But the American people, in growing numbers, both trust and like Glenn Beck because he is honest in his feelings, loves America, and thinks like most of the people who are educated and up to date with current events, politics and what is going on beneath the surface.

This year alone Glenn Beck has had 3 books on the best seller lists: Glenn Beck's Common Sense, Arguing with Idiots, The Christmas Sweater: A Picture Book.

Thought For The Day - 9.13.08

"When people talk, listen completely.   Most people never listen."
…Ernest Hemingway, American novelist, writer and journalist

You already know to listen. But do you truly know how — it’s the one skill that separates extraordinary friends from ordinary friends and exceptional employees from average employees. For listening isn’t simply done with your ears — it takes your eyes, your body language, your mind, and your heart. You see, great listeners absorb the other person’s thoughts and feelings and empathize with the person’s situation. Rather than simply hearing the words, you need to hear their purpose.

Most people are too busy thinking about what they are going to say next, to really listen, really care or learn something.

But as the old saying goes… “God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason.”

Somebody might have told the rude crew ofThe View that…  When you are too busy talking yourself to hear or learn anything and too self-righteous or have so totally made up your mind to even let your guest finish a sentence… that you don’t need a guest on at all.  I guess they are confused and think talk show means:  only they talk… and only their views are allowed?

And then there is Oprah… the talk show Queen who professes the empowerment of women but won’t even have Republican Vice Presidential Sarah Palin on her show?

I guess this tells us a lot about all these women!

John McCain appeared on “The View.” (Photo: Steve Fenn/Reuters, via ABC)

Senator John McCain bounded onto the set of “The View” this morning, perhaps expecting a fun session chatting with the ladies about the softer side of his presidential campaign.

But once he settled onto the couch, he got a pretty good grilling — on earmarks, on his erstwhile image as a “maverick” and, of course, about his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin. He also defended his ads against Senator Barack Obama, saying “they are not lies,” and his wife, Cindy, who appeared later, declined to answer a question about how many houses the McCains own.

Mr. McCain also had some kind words for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, who may have been the first choice for president among many viewers of “The View.” The show is watched by 3.4 million people, according to Nielsen, 78 percent of whom are women and whose median age is 56 years old.

A visit to “The View” is becoming a rite of passage for candidates as they try to shore up their appeal among women (Mr. McCain also taped a segment today for the Rachael Ray show.)

Anyway, Ms. Walters led off the questioning of Mr. McCain, and right away set the tone for the rest of the interview.

It was not the questions...  It was the lack of listening, the rudeness and what seemed like disinterest of the ladies of 'The View' in what McCain had to say!  They took turns asking questions and then rudely interrupting him before he could fully respond.

She first asked Mr. McCain to defend his earlier statement that Ms. Palin was “the greatest vice presidential candidate in the history of the United States.” Was he perhaps overlooking John Adams or George H.W. Bush?

“We politicians are never given to exaggeration,” Mr. McCain began with a smile, but then turned more serious. “The fact is,” he said, “I think she’s a great person, she’s a great governor, she’s the most popular governor in America, she understands the energy issues.” (That phrase about being the most popular governor refers to her approval ratings in Alaska, which have consistently been quite high, including a poll in July that put her approval rating at 80 percent.)

Ms. Walters also noted that Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin have said that her job will be to reform Washington. But, she pointed out, Mr. McCain has been in Congress for 22 years, the Republicans have been in the White House for eight years, so who, exactly, is Ms. Palin going to reform?

“The Democrats have been in charge of both houses for the last two years,” Mr. McCain replied.

Pressed, he added: “The Republicans, the Democrat party, even the independents. She’ll reform all of Washington.”

How?

“By doing what she did in Alaska.”

What, exactly?

“First of all, earmark spending, which she vetoed a half a billion dollars worth in the state of Alaska.”

But she also put earmarks in, Ms. Walters noted.

“Not as governor she didn’t,” Mr. McCain said.

But as governor, she did. As the Anchorage Daily News, among others, has reported, in Ms. Palin’s first year as governor, she requested 52 earmarks valued at $256 million, and this year, her office asked the Alaska delegation in Washington to help land 31 earmarks valued at $197 million. Also, Citizens Against Government Waste ranks Alaska as having received the “most pork per capita” of all states this year.

Barbara Walters with John and Cindy McCain. (Photo: Steve Fenn/Reuters, via ABC)

Mr. McCain went on to say that Ms. Palin was “a reform governor,” had taken on and beat the incumbent governor of her own party, “she sold the plane, she fired the chef.”

Ms. Walters noted that she sold the plane at a loss.

“You wanted her to keep it?” Mr. McCain asked.

“No,” said Ms. Walters, “I wanted her to get her money back.”

Mr. McCain said that Ms. Palin “freed Alaska for the first time,” saying she “took government out of the hands of the special interests and the oil companies and the old-boy network and gave it back to the people of Alaska” and “that’s what we have to do in Washington.”

But what exactly will she do?

“The same thing,” Mr. McCain replied. “Break the old-boy network, the special interests that control our agenda in Washington.”

After that exchange, Joy Behar lamented to Mr. McCain that he used to be more of a “maverick” but now he’s in “lockstep” with the Republican Party and President Bush’s policies.

“I don’t see the old John McCain that used to really buck the system as much,” she said, then kind of undercut her own question by adding, “and I understand why — you want to get elected.” The audience applauded and Mr. McCain smiled.

“I’m the same person, and I have the same principles, and I have the same issues,” he said. “I’m the same guy.”

Ms. Behar brought up two of his recent ads against Mr. Obama, one suggesting that when Mr. Obama had used a colloquial expression about putting “lipstick on a pig,” he was referring to Ms. Palin and the other suggesting that Mr. Obama wanted sex education for children. “We know those two ads are untrue, they’re lies,” she said, and yet at the end of each, Mr. McCain’s voice says he approves of those messages.

“They are not lies,” Mr. McCain said. “And if you’ve seen some of the ads that are running against me…”

The conversation broke off in cross-talk, and Mr. McCain then rejoined to say that Mr. Obama “chooses his words very carefully and he shouldn’t have said it.”

He added: “This is a tough campaign.” He also said that if Mr. Obama had agreed to go around the country with him and do town-hall meetings together, the campaign would have a more elevated tone.

On the topic of abortion, Mr. McCain said that Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973, was “a very bad decision.” He said he would not impose a litmus test on any of his nominations to the Supreme Court “because that’s not fair to the American people.” But, he said, he would nominate justices who would interpret the constitution as it was written and not legislate from the bench.

This prompted Whoopi Goldberg to worry that if he wanted to return to the constitution as it was written, and not as it was amended, she would be returned to slavery.

“I understand your point,” Mr. McCain said, as Ms. Goldberg theatrically fanned herself as if recovering from a big scare. “An excellent point.”

He then said that while he is “pro-life” because he believes that life begins at conception, “I also respect the views of those who don’t.”

That prompted Ms. Walters to ask, “So, you believe in choice?” but before he could answer, they all agreed to move on to other topics.

Shortly thereafter, Cindy McCain, the candidate’s wife, arrived on the set. She was asked if she agreed with Ms. Palin that there should be no exceptions for abortions, even in cases of rape and incest. (Ms. Palin has indicated that she would allow an exception only if the mother’s life were at stake.)

“We disagree on that issue,” Mrs. McCain said.

So, there are exceptions? “Yes,” Mrs. McCain said, adding, “John and I agree on this issue.” Mr. McCain has said he favors exceptions for rape and incest and to save the life of the mother.

Mr. McCain swooped in at this uncomfortable moment for his wife and said he would appoint all kinds of people to his administration, including Democrats. Asked if that included Mrs. Clinton, he took the opportunity to pay homage.

“I know that she wants to stay in the Senate, but I will work with Hillary Clinton because I’ve worked with her in the past, we’ve traveled together, Barbara, you know that, we have a working relationship that’s of mutual respect and frankly, appreciation,” he said. As she comes back to the Senate, he said, “she will be one of the most influential and powerful members of the Senate. You got to work together.”

This brought a big round of applause.

Then it was quickly back to the meat grinder, with Ms. Walters asking Mrs. McCain how many houses she owned.

Mrs. McCain didn’t answer that question.

“You know something, that’s not part of this campaign,” Mrs. McCain replied. “We’re fortunate enough to come from a family, particularly my dad and mom, who worked very hard to give me the best that they could and we are fortunate to be able to live a good life and share and give to other people who are not so fortunate.”

This too won a big round of applause.

Oprah Winfrey... Prejudicially Chooses Not To Have First Female Republican VP Candidate On Her Show...

Although Oprah is not a journalist nor hosts a news show... she does have a responsibility to fairness...

It is known that Oprah is an Obama supporter... but what happened to her crusade of empowering women??

Sign this Petition to get Sarah Palin on the Oprah Winfrey Show!

Oprah Winfrey is an example of someone who overcame hardship and stereotypes to build the life she wanted. Join us in respectfully asking her to reconsider a public interview with Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin. Like Oprah, Ms. Palin has carved out her own path in life-- from pursuing a career in a field and political party dominated by men, to her difficult choice to raise a child with Down Syndrome. In the interest of empowering women and providing them with examples of strong female leadership, we request that Oprah Winfrey arrange an interview with Sarah Palin.
