WASHINGTON -- President Obama yesterday pushed wavering House members to OK health-care legislation for his own political standing and for theirs, as the battle came down to a bare-knuckle brawl for votes.

Obama met with groups of liberal and more conservative Democrats in the White House to try to assemble a winning coalition.

"To maintain a strong presidency, we need to pass the bill," Obama told the liberals, according to Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who attended the meeting.

"He made a very pointed, very realistic case about how this is an opportunity that won't come around for a long time."

The heightened presidential pressure came on a day when Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) said a dozen centrist Democrats weren't willing to swallow Senate language that they say provides federal funding for abortion.
"We're not going to vote for the bill with that language in there," Stupak, who leads a faction of anti-abortion Democrats who have voted for health reform, told ABC yesterday.

Congressional leaders say they want to bring Obama's top legislative priority up for a vote by the end of the month.

On Wednesday, Obama called on Congress to stop debating and hold an "up-or-down vote" using a hard-line tactic called "reconciliation" and having the House take up the Senate-passed bill.

"I feel very confident about how we go forward," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters.
Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens) said speakers have a way of delivering votes in the end.

"When they want something done, they tend to get it done," he said.

But with Pelosi (D-Calif.) hoping for a vote before Easter and the White House preferring a vote before Obama leaves for Guam, Indonesia and Australia on March 18, any deadline appeared flexible, as it has for the last year.

But House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) admitted "the world doesn't fall apart" if the latest deadline isn't met.

"At this point in time, we don't have a bill," Hoyer said. "It's a little difficult to count votes if you don't have a bill."

To get a bill through the House, Obama must thread a legislative needle, picking up the votes of some conservative Democrats who opposed a more expansive version while probably losing votes over the abortion provision, which might not be able to be modified.

The House passed its bill in November with only 220 votes, but since then, a handful of lawmakers have left the House and some former yes votes have announced their opposition.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged her colleagues to back a major overhaul of U.S. health care even if it threatens their political careers, a call to arms that underscores the issue's massive role in this election year.  


Lawmakers sometimes must enact policies that, even if unpopular at the moment, will help the public, Pelosi said in an interview being broadcast Sunday the ABC News program "This Week."


"We're not here just to self-perpetuate our service in Congress," she said. "We're here to do the job for the American people."  (Hmmm... this from a women who has held her congressional seat for over a quarter of a century and has reaped personal gain from favorable legislation for her husband's business interests.)


It took courage for Congress to pass Social Security and Medicare, which eventually became highly popular, she said, "and many of the same forces that were at work decades ago are at work again against this bill."

It's unclear whether Pelosi's remarks will embolden or chill dozens of moderate House Democrats who face withering criticisms of the health care proposal in visits with constituents and in national polls. Republican lawmaker unanimously oppose the health care proposals, and many GOP strategists believe voters will turn against Democrats in the November elections.

Pelosi, from San Francisco, is more liberal than scores of her Democratic colleagues. But she generally walks a careful line between urging them to back left-of-center policies and giving them a green light to buck party leaders to improve their re-election hopes.

Her comments to ABC, in the interview released Sunday, seemed to acknowledge the widely held view that Democrats will lose House seats this fall -- maybe a lot. They now control the chamber 255 to 178, with two vacancies. Pelosi stopped well short of suggesting Democrats could lose their majority, but she called on members of her party to make a bold move on health care with no prospects of GOP help.
"Time is up," she said. "We really have to go forth."

Her comments somewhat echoed those of President Obama, who said at the end of last week's bipartisan health care summit that Congress should act on the issue and let voters render their verdicts. "That's what elections are for," he said.

The White House says Obama, perhaps on Wednesday, will announce a "way forward" on health care. He, Pelosi, and Senate Democratic leaders have left little doubt that they hope to pass a Democratic-crafted bill under "budget reconciliation" rules that would bar Republican filibusters in the Senate. It's unclear whether Pelosi can muster the needed votes in the House.

White House officials say they will redouble efforts to remind voters that the Senate passed an Obama-backed health care bill in December, with a super majority of 60 votes. The new plan calls for the House to pass that bill and send it to Obama's desk, and then use Senate budget reconciliation rules to make several changes demanded by House Democrats.

Following a Republican victory in Massachusetts last month, Democrats now control 59 of the Senate's 100 seats, one vote short of the number needed to block GOP filibusters.

Pelosi told CNN that "in a matter of days" Democrats will have specific legislative language on health care to show to the public and to wavering lawmakers. She predicted voters will warm up to the bill once they understand its details.

"When we have a bill," she said, "you can bake the pie, you can sell the pie. But you have to have a pie to sell."

Obama and Democratic lawmakers say they may add several more Republican ideas to their legislative package, even if it's unlikely to attract a single GOP vote. One idea, by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., would focus on battling waste and fraud in the medical system.

The main elements of the Democratic plan are known, and opposed by Republicans in Congress. It would insure about 30 million more Americans over 10 years with subsidies for the poor and a new requirement for nearly everyone to carry health insurance.

It would also bar some insurance company practices, such as denying coverage to people with medical problems. And it would establish government-run exchanges to help individuals and small businesses obtain insurance policies, although it would exclude the "public option" that many liberals wanted.

What MSM Won’t Tell You: Doctors Are Challenging Government Health Care-and the AMA

Attempting to enact his big-government health care scheme, President Obama and his supporters frequently claimed that a “majority” of doctors supported his health-care plans. When the American Medical Association – which had opposed HillaryCare – signed onto Obama’s plan last year, the organization seemed to make the President’s case. Most people assumed that the AMA represented most of the doctors in the country. But in fact, the AMA represents less than 20 percent of all physicians in the United States. And yet as the organization’s leadership moved more to the left, it held a near monopoly on media attention on issues pertaining to public health. No longer.

As the AMA has become increasingly politicized in recent years – issuing a statement in support of climate change, for example, in 2008 – a new group of doctors has risen to challenge them. Like other anti-statist groups that have risen in opposition to the Obama-Reid-Pelosi agenda, Docs4PatientCare are challenging the AMA’s stranglehold on health care matters, just as other groups once challenged the right of the left-leaning American Bar Association to determine what judges are and are not qualified for the United States Supreme Court. How Docs4PatientCare managed to barge its way into the closed-door meetings of Washington offers a lesson to other groups seeking to have a voice in their federal government.

Founded by Dr. Hal Scherz, a prominent Atlanta physician, the group of doctors expressed concern that like so many other professional groups, the AMA’s leadership have been thoroughly “Washingtonized” – caring more about the pleadings of other lobbyists on K Street, White House invitations and Capitol Hill committee appearances than the professions they are supposed to represent. As doctors have taken a battering over several decades from insurance companies, HMOS, and government agencies, Scherz says the AMA was a bystander.

“As the insurance companies become more and more impossible and government intrusion keeps growing, we’ve seen our delivery of care to our patients compromised and our incomes decrease,” he said.

But it was the AMA’s support for ObamaCare that really troubled Scherz and others in his field.

Many doctors run small businesses and by nature are entrepreneurial. Why then, he wondered, would the AMA favor ObamaCare’s regulatory and taxation burden? Why would they want a multitude of government panels interfering with the decisions doctors usually make with their patients about care and treatment? Recognizing that the AMA was compromised, Scherz decided to organize his own group in opposition to the Obama plan.

He recalled how effective talk radio had been the year before in stopping the seemingly unstoppable immigration amnesty bill, and wondered if there was a way for him to get his voice heard on the air. In fact, Scherz was driving home one night when he heard talk show host Hugh Hewitt ask on the air, “Where are the doctors?” opposing ObamaCare in the health care fight. Scherz wanted to give him an answer. So when Salem radio brought a “road show” on Obama’s first 100 days to Atlanta last May, he decided to attend. Listening to Hewitt and other Salem talk show stars like Bill Bennett and Dennis Praeger again ask, “Where are the doctors?” Scherz waited patiently in a long line of people to give them his answer. But just as he reached the head of the line, the master of ceremonies shut down the mikes for the evening.

Undeterred Scherz called a fellow physician, Congressman Tom Price, and asked the Congressman if he would come address a group of doctors if Scherz could assemble them. Price agreed and when Scherz got 40 doctors in the waiting room of his office to discuss ObamaCare, the meeting ended with the doctors deciding to form an organization to it. They christened themselves Docs 4 Patient Care that night and put together enough money to hire an attorney, set up a business structure, and establish a website.

Growing past this initial cadre of supporters proved difficult, however. Scherz spent as much time as he could emailing and phone calling more doctors to join the effort, but the response rate was slow. So coming home one night from the operating room, he called the Hewitt show and got in on the call-in queue. Waiting on hold for two hours, he finally got on the air in the show’s third hour. Delighted to have his missing-doctor question finally answered, Hewitt spoke with Scherz for a lengthy period.

“Then Hewitt blogged about us and put us the website and that made all the difference,” said Scherz.

Having heard the doctor on Hewitt’s program, Salem Radio’s vice president of content, Lee Habeeb, a legendary talk show producer, booked him on other Salem shows including a co-hosting gig with Mike Gallagher in Dallas, Atlanta, and New York. “Mike and his show were coming on strong. So it was just the right moment. He made our group a focal point of listener interest and it really helped,” says Scherz. This led to television interviews, involving Scherz and other members of the group to get their message out, such as Fred Shessel, one of Scherz’s partners and vice president, Scott Barbour, a prominent orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon, and Todd Rubin, a local anesthesiologist who started making something of the website (www.docs4patientcare.org). One talk show listener and activist, Felicia Horton, asked to be brought on as volunteer executive director.

With their newfound growth and publicity, Docs 4 Patient Care made getting heard in Washington their next objective. Wearing their scrubs and white jackets, the doctors drew attention as they walked the halls of congress and spoke at rallies on Capitol Hill. Often just showing up in the offices of members of the House and Senate, they would manage to get appointments with the members themselves or key staff members.

One particular meeting that stuck out in memories was with the staff of Senator Olympia Snowe, the Maine Republican senator who was being heavily courted by Democrats in the hope of getting some bipartisan window dressing for the Democratic bill. The meeting was a long one by Capitol Hill standards and the Snowe staff kept bringing up the arguments made by Democrats on behalf of ObamaCare. But in the face of the doctor’s facts and experience the arguments didn’t stand up long. Schertz believes Docs 4 Patient Care may have helped make a difference in Snowe’s ultimate, and fateful, decision not to sign on to ObamaCare.

Another memorable incident cited by members of the group occurred when one of their members, Joyce Lovett MD, an African American female pediatrician, got the doctors into a meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus. A debate opened up over the health care plan and soon the doctors were text-messaging their colleagues visiting other offices around the capitol for reinforcements. As the room began filling up, the doctors, doing well in the back and forth of debate, seemed to be changing some minds. At that point, a worried Black Caucus leader and diehard partisan, John Conyers, broke up the meeting, saying the doctors were more interested in embarrassing the first black president than in achieving real reform. Unused to this sort of political attack, the astonished doctors told other caucus members how they felt after taking time from their practices and patients to come all the way to Washington only to hear a member of Congress insinuate they were racists. One caucus member privately dismissed Conyers’ “old ways of thinking,” suggesting that the CBC might be ready for fresh, and more innovative, leadership.

In addition to return trips to Washington over the next 4 months, Docs4PatientCare also helped organize physician led-rallies around the country with hundreds of doctors participating in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, Indianapolis and Portland. The rallies proved crucial as the largely Atlanta-based group made new connections in taking on a national character. Jaime Ronderos MD, a prominent Texas anesthesiologist, who had already organized many of the doctors in his own state, folded his group in with D4PC. Also coming on board was Marc Neerhof, a perinatologist who is also on the faculty of the University of Chicago and a skillful op-ed writer. In addition, Reed Wilson, a well-known Los Angeles cardiologist with a business and political background became a board member. And finally, as the group showed its interest in working with all health care professionals, Joel Strom, a Los Angeles dentist and experienced coalition organizer agreed to head up an outreach program.

Only last month, the group had its inaugural board meeting in Atlanta where, in addition to making plans to increase their public and media presence, they inaugurated a fund raising program that would let them run a full-blown field operation in the elections this Fall. “We want to be out there in the states and let voters know which members of Congress put patient care second and voted for this power grab by Washington politicians,” said Scherz.

But, beyond this, Scherz and the other board members want Docs 4 patient Care to grow into what the AMA should have been. This means more than defeating ObamaCare. The group is non-partisan and anxious to work with all those who want to hear from Docs 4 Patient Care on the dangers of state-run medicine. With chapters recently up and running in several states, he sees growth ahead. That is likely discouraging news for the status quo world of Washington, D.C., but an inspiration for other Americans who see what their government is doing and want to offer an alternative.

President Obama is working on health care legislation intended to reconcile differences between House and Senate Democrats that could be attached to a budget bill and avoid a Republican filibuster, according to a published report.

The president's proposal, which is still being written, will be posted on the Internet by Monday morning, senior administration officials and Congressional aides told the New York Times.

By piggybacking the legislation onto a budget bill, Democrats would be able to advance the bill with a simple majority of just 51 votes, averting a Republican filibuster in the Senate.

The White House signaled Thursday that an aggressive, all-Democratic strategy for overhauling the nation's health system remains a serious option, even as Obama invites Republicans to next week's televised summit to seek possible compromises.

"It will be a reconciliation bill," the Times quoted a Democratic aide as saying. "If Republicans don't come with any substantial offers, this is what we would do."

The administration's stance could set the stage for a political showdown, with Democrats struggling to enact the president's top domestic priority and Republicans trying to block what many conservatives see as government overreach.

Obama's plan, like the House and Senate bills, would expand coverage to some 30 million, require most Americans to carry insurance or face financial penalties, and block insurers from denying coverage to people with pre-existing medical conditions, the Times reported.

One Capitol Hill Democrat told the Times abortion remains "a wild card."

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Thursday that Obama plans to have a health proposal that "will take some of the best ideas and put them into a framework" ahead of the Feb. 25 summit.

Obama has said he is open to Republican ideas for changing the health care system. But many Democrats seriously doubt GOP leaders will support compromises that could draw enough lawmakers from both parties to create a bipartisan majority.

If next week's meeting does not break the logjam, congressional Democrats will face a tough choice. They can pass a highly diluted health care bill or nothing at all, which would send them into the November elections with a high-profile failure despite their control of Congress and the White House.

Or they can use the aggressive and contentious tactic, known as reconciliation, to pass a far-reaching health care bill in the Senate without having to face the GOP. Democrats lost their ability to block filibusters when Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown won a Senate seat last month.

Both parties have used reconciliation rules in the past. But Republicans have practically dared Democrats to do so on health care, citing polls showing significant opposition to the legislation.

It's unclear whether the House or Senate can muster the necessary votes. Democrats, who now hold 255 of the House's 435 seats, drew only one GOP ally when the House passed its health care bill, 220-215, last November. Since then, one Democrat who voted for the bill has resigned, one has died and a third plans to leave office Feb. 28. Moreover, changes meant to meet Senate demands could peel away enough liberals on one end, and party centrists on the other, to cause the revised bill to fail.

In the Senate, Democrats control 59 seats, and reconciliation rules require only a simple majority. But several Democratic senators have expressed discomfort or outright opposition to using the rules to thwart filibusters on health care.

The White House has invited Republicans to bring their own proposals, but GOP leaders have treated the event warily at best.

House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio said Thursday, "a productive, bipartisan conversation on health care starts with a clean sheet of paper." His office labeled next week's meeting the "summit of all fears."

But at least one moderate Republican was optimistic about the session.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said if the summit succeeds, a bipartisan bill could be put together and passed within six weeks. "My advice to our Republican leadership is we should view this as a good faith effort and go in there with a consensus list of provisions that we could support and that would make a difference," she said in an interview with The Associated Press.

House Democrats are insisting on several changes to the bill the Senate passed on Christmas Eve, before Brown was elected to succeed the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. The changes include reducing or eliminating a proposed tax on generous employer-provider health plans, and eliminating a Medicaid subsidy aimed only at Nebraska.

Also, some House Democrats who oppose legalized abortion are demanding that the Senate's more permissive language on the topic be replaced by the House provisions. It was unclear Thursday how that might be achieved.

The cost of the legislation -- about $1 trillion over 10 years -- would be paid for through Medicare cuts and a series of tax increases. House officials said Democratic leaders are not yet pressing wary colleagues to back a health care bill under the special procedural rules. That could happen soon, however, if next week's summit fails to produce a bipartisan breakthrough.

House congressional aides said they expect leaders such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to tell colleagues that using all their parliamentary muscle to pass a health care bill -- even if it triggers withering criticism from the right -- is preferable to facing voters empty-handed this fall.

Democrats will Implement "Trick" to Pass Health Care Reform
Washington, Feb 10 - Well, so much for a bipartisan strategy session on health care. Despite calls from the White House about bringing Republicans to the table to get their ideas into the debate, it looks like Democrats have already decided on a plan to pass their original legislation. Legislation Americans have soundly rejected from coast to coast.

Speaking at the National Health Policy Conference hosted by Academy Health and Health Affairs, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's senior health care adviser Wendell Primus said that Democratic leaders in Congress will implement a legislative "trick" to pass their very unpopular version of health care reform.

Mark Tapscott with the Washington Examiner writes that Congress Daily, which originally published the story, is a subscription-only publication, but provided a link to LifeNews.com, which provided these details:

"In comments reported by Congress Daily, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s top health care aide Wendell Primus admitted top Democrats have already decided on the strategy to pass the Senate's pro-abortion, government-run health care bill.

"Primus explained that the Senate will use the controversial reconciliation strategy that will have the House approve the Senate bill and both the House and Senate okaying changes to the bill that the Senate will sign off on by preventing Republicans from filibustering.

“'The trick in all of this is that the president would have to sign the Senate bill first, then the reconciliation bill second, and the reconciliation bill would trump the Senate bill.

Why propose a televised, bipartisan meeting on February 25th if the underlying plan has been to pass the Democrats' original health care proposal all along? Well, it's simple. President Obama wants to give the appearance of bipartisan cooperation without really caring at all. It's one PR stunt after another with this White House, and this latest action is a clear assault on the intelligence of the American people.

The Democratic leadership of this Congress and White House simply refuses to take no for an answer when it comes to a government takeover of your health care. They simply refuse to consider any idea being proposed by me or any of my Republican colleagues. Is this the leadership you want in Washington, or more importantly, the leadership you deserve?

The Dems have shut the GOP out of the entire process, bribed their own party and told both the GOP and the American Public that they will not start over and put together a simple bipartisan reform of healthcare, which is all we need. Why? Because this was never about healthcare or healthcare reform… it was always about a progressive government takeover of 1/6 of the economy and major information and decisions in all our lives.

NO HEALTHCARE TALKS UNTIL GOVERNMENT- RUN HEALTHCARE IS D.O.A. AND OFFICIALLY OFF THE TABLE!

REQUEST BY REPUBLICANS - THEY ARE ON TO OBAMA'S INTENTIONS!

TO ALL SENATORS:

The People have spoken JUST SAY NO to talks or at least the onset of negotiations until the existing bills for government takeover of healthcare are scrapped!!!!!

You may have to attend the meeting and bring your ideas, but you need to stand your ground and insist the process starts from scratch. Perhaps bringing along piles of letters like these will help Obama see that as usual, he has misread the will of the people??

The majority of Americans want nothing to do with the government takeover of healthcare, commonly known as ObamaCare!!!

We want sensible bipartisan corrections to our present system of healthcare. We do not want a government takeover and creation of an entire new system.

Most Americans ‘want’:

All the bills floating around, passed or not, by the House or Senate involving or related to HC scrapped. They also want hidden provisions for the bills that were hidden in other legislation reversed.

(a.) Comprehensive Tort Reform

(b.) Portable Health Insurance allowing all HC insurance companies to be sell in all 50-states and all Americans to be able to shop around and purchase insurance from any of those companies.

(c.) A stop to exclusion for previous conditions by insurance companies.

(d.) An investigation and serious overall to stop fraud and waste by insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid and Veterans and Reservation Health Services.

(e.) Natural, holistic and alternative procedures and meds to be included in the system (which are generally cheaper and often times a long term solution).

(f.) Other logical non-freedom stealing or non-government involved related programs, revisions and common sense reform that we elect and trust you to give us.

(g.) A simplified overhaul of the system we have that is overhauled in a transparent way and posted online for everyone to read, at every phase, for a minimum of 5-days before a vote.

Most Americans ‘do not want’:

(a.) Government controlled or government run healthcare in any form or version over and above what we already have in the programs mentioned above in (d.)

(b.) Major reductions in healthcare services for seniors

(c.) A centralized medical record database of health records that are either controlled by or the federal government has access to.

(d.) Illegal aliens covered by any government programs or funds other than true necessary emergency room services.

(e.) Any special deals, especially for Andy Stern and the unions.

***We also do not want: the government telling us, our doctors or our families which services we may have and when we are too old to have them. We do not want the government having access to our medical records, financial records or our bank accounts. We do not want our records put on RFID chips that are injected into us. We do not want government representatives having the right to show up at our homes and intercede with the way we raise our children to any greater extent than they already are for emergency situations. In fact we do not want most of the things that are or have been written into the various ObamaCare Bills.

The majority of Americans want you to stand up for us against the Progressives in Congress and in the White House and stop this takeover of American Healthcare and we in turn will support you for re-election.

Please do not fall into the trap that is being set for you by Obama/Reid/Pelosi. After all the secretive deals and negotiations plus the total lack of transparency to develop bills they cannot pass with their supermajority they now intend to feature you as obstructionists and the party of NO.

BUT ‘JUST SAYING NO’ TO BIPARTISAN NEGOTIATIONS UNTIL THE OBAMACARE BILLS ARE SCRAPED IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO AND WHAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANT YOU TO DO!!

IF OBAMA REALLY CARED ABOUT THIS COUNTRY HE WOULD BE FOCUSING ON JOBS, STARTING OVER ON HEALTHCARE REFROM WITHOUT BEING ASKED, ABANDONING CAP AND TRADE AND GETTING SOME REAL ADVICE ON FOREIGN POLICY.

MOST PEOPLE FEEL OBAMA’S GOAL IS TO DESTROY AMERICA AND I WOULD HOPE THAT YOU REALIZE THIS BY NOW, OR AT LEAST CONSIDER IT.

Obama cannot be trusted; he is just doing this upcoming meeting for show. He does not respect you the GOP and non-progressive sensible moderate Democrats and Independents or the American people… especially the American People.

Krauthammer – That ‘Dog’ Don’t Hunt

Charles Krauthammer indicated that obviously Obama did not get hear the message and Obama pretty much verified by pushing his ‘it is my way or the highway’ in his surprise meeting with the press corps yesterday.

Both (GOP) Senators Boehner and McConnell stated that they made it clear… why starting with the two bills (the House and Senate versions) that the Dems could not pass, with their supermajority, and that the American people don’t want, makes no sense. Eric Kantor has sent Obama a serious letter letting him just that, that government-run healthcare needs to be off the table and negotiations need to start from scratch.

Obama stated and seems to think that the American people are tired of (have soured on) the process and said that they did not want to go through another set of negotiations so he was not backing off his mega takeover of healthcare. As usual his ideological interpretation is totally wrong.

Americans do not want Progressives and the Federal Government taking over healthcare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Majority of Americans want the present bills all scraped and want Congress and Obama to start over in a bipartisan way to fix the parts of the existing system that are broken. Except for a small percentage of Kool Aid Drinking Progressives nobody wants the Federal government taking over their healthcare… period!!!

As usual, Obama’s perception is off or he is purposely deaf and blind.

This latest bipartisan meeting on HC has all the markings of a Trap to make the GOP look unwilling to work together as Obama stacks everything into a ‘my way or the highway pile’ in an attempt to make the Republicans look obstructive. But it isn’t going to work. The people are on to him!!

In one of Krauthammer’s more humorous reviews, he says of Obama, “He thinks it is about the process not the substance. He thinks it is the dog food ad or labeling, or that he didn’t explain it well enough in dogese or even the bowl, when in reality it is the fact that the dogs don’t like the dog food. In reality, “the president is barking up the wrong tree!!”

And think about it, just last week in the State of the Union speech, Obama tried to sell himself as the jobs president… but now we are back to the ideological agenda of the takeover of healthcare and pushing cap and trade, even though nobody wants ObamaCare and while Washington and most of the rest of the country is under several feet of snow with more coming.

The GOP needs to attend the summit but needs to insist that the healthcare reform process be started over. Using Krauthammer’s theme to analyze Obama’s insistence on starting with the bills that won’t pass the best that can be said is, “That dog won’t hunt!”.

The Second Massachusetts Shot Was Heard Round the World… But The Problem Seems to Be That Obama Is Tone Deaf!!

HAPPY TAX YEAR!

Before we kiss 2009 a fond farewell, with all its horrors, keep in mind what other goodies we leave behind -- tax breaks. We are now entering the tax part of Obama's 'Tax and Spend' plan. You know how he loves to say "My Plan'- we are going to feel the squeeze of the vice he has put our country in. Not that we haven't suffered that pinch already. Now it really starts.

Not extending the exclusion of tax on unemployment compensation benefits will hit hard, with 7 million people (officially) unemployed, along with not reducing estimated tax payments for small businesses. (I guess there is some positive, the other 7 to 11 million no longer employed but out of the system at least won’t have to pay the taxes.)

Whatever happens, we must keep up the momentum. Eleven months in politics is a long time, and the 2010 elections will be critical. Keeping a watchful eye on the machinations in Congress is like keeping the wheels oiled, and letting them know we are now watching how they do their job will also keep the pressure on them.

They are cleaning our clock, and it must be stopped.

While millions of Americans are more than ready to put 2009 behind them, they should know that Congress failed to reauthorize dozens of tax breaks for individuals and businesses before the Members scurried home for the Holidays. These “expiring provisions” affect every American in one way or another as individuals or businesses. By allowing them to lapse, Congress has enacted tax increases at time when these taxpayers can least afford it.

The House has passed legislation (H.R. 4213) that would have extended 63 current tax provisions, but the Senate failed to bring this bill to a vote. Thus, all of these provisions expired at midnight last night. Notable provisions as reported today by Tax Notes include:

• Deduction of state and local general sales taxes (section 164) (Personal Tax Incentives)
• Additional standard deduction, up to $500 for individuals and $1,000 for couples, for state and local property taxes (section 63) (Personal Tax Incentives)
• Research tax credit and alternative simplified credit (section 41) (General Business Tax Incentives)
• New markets tax credit (section 45D) (Community Assistance Provisions)
• Empowerment zone incentives (sections 1391 and 1202) (Community Assistance Provisions)
• Renewal community tax incentives (sections 1400E, 1400F, 1400I, and 1400J) (Community Assistance Provisions)
• District of Columbia Investment Incentives (sections 1400, 1400A, 1400B, and 1400C) (Community Assistance Provisions)
• Net disaster loss designation and $500 limit per casualty for personal casualty losses attributed to federally declared natural disasters (section 165) (General Disaster Relief Provisions)
• Expensing for qualified disaster expenses (section 198A) (General Disaster Relief Provisions)
• Biodiesel and renewable diesel incentives (section 40A) (Energy Incentives)

Although the House has acted and passed its version of the Tax Extenders Act of 2009, the Senate failed to act on similar legislation, as a result the following additional key tax provisions will expire:

• Increased exemption levels for the individual alternative minimum tax (section 55) and personal tax credits allowed against the AMT (section 26)
• Exclusion of unemployment compensation benefits from gross income (section 85)
• Alternative fuel mixture tax credit (section 6426(e))
• Reduced estimated tax payments for small businesses (section 6654(d)(1)(D))

The Senate has had a lot on its plate this year. But it is still unacceptable that they have stalled on the chance to extend these tax provisions that affect every American. By allowing these tax provisions to expire, taxes will rise on many individuals and businesses, and for some of these groups, a punitively steep tax hike.

At the very least, we hope for a New Year’s Resolution from Congress that it acts swiftly in 2010 on passing legislation to amend and extend tax laws that assist every American individual and business which will lead to a stronger, robust economy.

Even better, would be if Congress reformed the entire tax code and brought us a tax system based on one rate, applied once to all income, and in a form every taxpayer can understand. However, that may be asking too much in one New Year’s Resolution.

Some things we can be thankful for is that God answered our prayers and stopped Obama (at least for now) from signing the Copenhagen Treaty and thereby ceding away our sovereignty through ClimateGate and then emphasizing the cooling trend to those slow learners by creating record snow storms in both Copenhagen and Washington DC on either end of the conference.

And thus far we have avoided the passing of Obamacare… and it can still be avoided. So rest up over the weekend and ready yourself for the continuation of the fight. Many have pressured their representatives and threatened them with loss of their offices, as they returned home for the holidays. So this fight is not over.

Cap and Trade … uh Tax and Gov’t Controlled healthcare will be the largest taxes and loss of freedoms this country has ever seen, making the other taxes listed above look like chump change and make us, the American people, look like the chumps!

The Imprudent Tyranny of Harry Reid - writes legislation that 'cannot be repealed!'

Buried in his massive amendment to the Senate version of Obamacare is Reid's anti-democratic poison pill designed to prevent any future Congress from repealing the central feature of this monstrous legislation. Beginning on page 1,000 of the measure, Section 3403 reads in part: "... it shall not be in order in the Senate or the House of Representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection."

In other words, if President Obama signs this measure into law, Reid intends that no future Senate or House will be able to change a single word of Section 3403, regardless whether future Americans or their representatives in Congress wish otherwise. Note that the subsection at issue here concerns the regulatory power of the Independent Medicare Independent Advisory Board to "reduce the per capita rate of growth in Medicare spending."

We have news for old Harry… He won’t be re-elected and the entire bill or any part of it can be changed, including this commie claus by a 2/3 vote of the new Senate. But the Audacity of Reid, Pelosi and Obama is beyond unbelievable.

I can hardly think of anytime in my memory when the American people have been as clear about anything as they are about President Obama’s healthcare reform. When there was a minor unease about the Dubai ports deal a few years back – those who sat in the seats of power couldn’t fall over themselves fast enough to appeal to us as their loyal constituents. When Harriet Myers was nominated to the US Supreme Court, and a low keyed murmur of dissent was detected – why Congress acted swiftly to demonstrate how responsive they were to our needs.

But now? Rarely has this country ever experienced such a howling shriek of protest as what is occurring. A sleeping giant is indeed awakening, and doesn’t like what it sees one little bit. Nothing less than a massive, brazen, and ideologically driven assault on our rights as citizens, and on our freedoms as Americans to determine our own life decisions is being attempted. This take over of the US healthcare industry by a one payer system is being rightly seen by all as the greatest threat to freedom this nation has ever known!

And how are they in Congress responding to it? They’re calling us names, rudely taking cell phone calls during town hall meetings, and in a cold, callous, and arrogant way fully intending to shove it all down our throats anyway! This is not Democracy. This is a craven power grab, a despotic tyranny, and an attack on our traditions, and heritage which can not, and will not stand. The American people will remember what Congress attempted to do here, whether they succeed in their wicked plans to ram socialized medicine through or not.

They will fall come election time. They will fall. The question is, will we stop them first, or will we fall too? Only time will tell.

A group of Texans have hunkered down here for what will likely be the last stand against Obama’s Healthcare Bill! In another time, we Texans asked for your help and you patriots responded from many states. Like most of you, we have grown increasingly weary of a U.S. Congress that does not want to hear the voice of the majority. Therefore, if we are to have any shot at all in defeating that monstrosity (the Healthcare Bill), then NOW IS NOT the time to quit but to march forward in this cause that is right and just. Tell the Senate that the American people reject any so-called "bipartisan compromise" reached through undemocratic closed-door negotiations!

The Senate has been debating Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-NV) health care bill, the so-called Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2009 (H.R. 3590), continuously for the past week. Reid even kept the Senate in session this weekend for both Saturday and Sunday to ensure that his key Senators were kept far away from their constituents in their home states.

So far, the Senate has voted on a number of amendments, however, most of the news has centered around amendments that have not yet been offered, as well as what is being discussed behind closed doors. As you know, Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) has been a key target to oppose this health care bill from the very beginning. He has publicly stated multiple times since his vote in favor of beginning debate on Harry Reid's bill that he would support a GOP filibuster attempt if the bill does not include "Stupak" language prohibiting abortion coverage-that is, Sen. Nelson has publicly committed to voting NO on the cloture motion to end debate and proceed to final passage if this requirement is not met. Currently, the Senate health care bill allows the public option to include coverage for abortion and allows women who receive government tax credits for insurance to enroll in a plan that covers the procedure, both of which amount to taxpayer funding of abortions on a new, massive scale. The issue of conscience protection for health care providers and Catholic hospitals, for example, would also need to be addressed in a coming pro-life amendment.

As the debate moves forward this week, please BEWARE of two things:

1. BEWARE of a compromise on abortion language. Unless the coverage for abortions in the public option and federal funding for abortions beyond the status quo of current law is removed, as well as adding conscience protections for health care providers, it will not be acceptable pro-life language and should be rejected by all pro-life Senators, including Sen. Ben Nelson and any other Senator who believes that it is wrong to massively expand federal funding for abortions in health care legislation.

Aside from the abortion problem, it is also important not to lose focus on the other big issue--the government-run insurance option--that has a handful of "swing-vote" Democrats and pro-abortion, "I voted for the Stimulus"-type of Republicans in closed-door talks working on a grand "compromise."

Most American have now realized that there is nothing about ObamaCare (or Cap and Trade) that has anything to do with helping the American People. Ex-con counts on “Faith Community” to pass health care and Glenn Beck’s take on Creamer (video)

The media furor over the White House state dinner crashers ignores the convicted felon who was invited to attend with the approval of Obama’s inner circle. The ex-convict, Robert B. Creamer, is a friend of White House adviser David Axelrod and the husband of Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois. A major Democratic Party political strategist, he is the author of a 628-page book that describes how the Democrats can become the permanent majority party by passing a national health care bill and giving amnesty to illegal immigrants.

With the support of major elements of the “faith community,” the first part of Creamer’s plan is on track.

Creamer’s Listen to Your Mother: Stand Up Straight: How Progressives Can Win,” is the book “penned in the pen,” as one observer described it. “I did much of the preliminary work on this book while spending five months on a forced sabbatical at the Federal Prison Camp at Terra Haute Indiana,” Creamer says. Creamer emerged from federal prison in November 2006 after serving five months for financial crimes. His prosecutor was the famous Patrick J. Fitzgerald, who also nailed disgraced former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

But this didn’t stop Creamer from being invited to the White House for the first state dinner. Indeed, it makes complete sense in view of the fact that Creamer’s book is full of praise for Obama and even reprints Obama’s 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address.

The acknowledgements section of Creamer’s book describes how he, like Obama, was influenced by Saul Alinsky (author of Rules for Radicals), described as “the legendary community organizer.” Book endorsements are featured from David Axelrod; Greg Galluzo of the Gamaliel Foundation, which originally sponsored Barack Obama’s work as a community organizer in Chicago; and Andy Stern of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Creamer notes in his book that Bush aide Karl Rove had predicted in 2004 a “permanent majority” in Congress for the Republican Party. That prediction fell apart just two years later, in 2006, when the Democrats picked up 30 House seats and 6 Senate seats. Nevertheless, Rove subsequently landed a job as a Fox News political analyst.

Creamer’s predictions have turned out to be more accurate. Released in 2007, Creamer’s book said that a successful campaign “to reshape the structure of one-sixth of the American economy,” the health care sector, would depend on getting 60 Democratic votes in the Senate and the election of a “progressive Democrat” in the White House. Today, of course, the Democrats have that significant advantage.

Creamer can take some credit for these developments. His firm, Strategic Consulting Group, still boasts an impressive client list that includes ACORN, SEIU, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and dozens of other “progressive” or Democratic Party state organizations.

Creamer, who went to prison for ripping off non-profit entities, emphasized using “the faith community” to mobilize support for universal health care by highlighting the morality of providing medical care to people in need.

It has not worked out as planned, but it has worked out. As we saw in the House, when the bill was in trouble, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi agreed to a demand from Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was in Rome, to hold a vote on an anti-abortion amendment introduced by Rep. Bart Stupak, a Catholic pro-life Democrat. At the same time, Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), told House Republican Leader John Boehner, a faithful Catholic, not to undermine the amendment. Boehner complied. As a result, the amendment passed, 240-194, with 64 Democrats and 176 Republicans in favor. This provided conservative Democrats enough cover to ignore the other objectionable aspects and vote for the final bill.

Washington Times religion reporter Julia Duin confirmed all of this, but noted in a story filed from the recent USCCB meeting in Baltimore that “Cardinal McCarrick walked away when I approached him about his call from the Vatican…”

Pelosi and many “progressives” acquiesced in the anti-abortion ploy, realizing that the provision could eventually be nullified through subsequent legislation.

Nevertheless, the Bishops are pursuing the same strategy in the Senate. Their chosen vehicle for anti-abortion language in this version of the bill appears to be Democratic Senator Robert Casey, a so-called “conservative” and “pro-life” Catholic Democrat from Pennsylvania. Casey says, however, that if his effort to water down the pro-abortion tone of the legislation fails, he may still vote for the bill.

It looks probable, therefore, that the Senate health care bill will pass. Then, the two versions will be combined in a congressional conference and the compromise will come before Congress for a final vote.

If passed, as Creamer understands, this will hook millions of Americans on another federal program, and they will depend on―and vote for―Democrats to grant them more benefits.

It is important to note that the Bishops, who have a reputation among some commentators as being politically “conservative,” have not been objecting to the “public option” in the Senate plan. Indeed, they have long favored a government guaranteed “right” to health care and federal funding to make that a reality.

The latest USCCB statement on the health care legislation urges Senators to “improve the Senate health care bill in the key areas of affordability, immigration, federal funding and coverage of abortion and conscience rights.” Translated into common-sense language, this means coverage for illegal aliens and more federal funding, in addition to the pro-life language that will enable some “conservative” Democrats and possibly some Republicans to vote for it.

Creamer himself spoke in his book of a “public plan,” which is supposed to guarantee that “right” to health care and which eventually became the “public option” in the actual legislation. In a speech captured on YouTube, Creamer’s wife, Rep. Schakowsky, candidly said that a public option is a Trojan Horse for a complete federal takeover.

Next is the immigration battle. Creamer explains that this “will have an enormous impact on the battle for power between the progressive and conservative forces in American society.” He explains that “If the Democrats continue to stand firmly for immigrant rights, the issue will define immigrants’ voting loyalties for a generation. If we are successful, a gigantic block of progressive votes will enter the electorate over the next 15 years―a block that could be decisive in the battle for the future.”

As we can already see, however, there is an overlap into the health care debate. And again, the “faith community” is playing a major role. In fact, the Catholic Bishops are not only vigorously lobbying for giving illegal immigrants access to a national health care plan but favor amnesty for them. In his recent testimony before the Senate, Cardinal McCarrick called it “legalization for the undocumented.”

It looks bleak for Republicans if the Bishops have their way and continue to play Creamer’s tune. GOP agreement with the Bishops on a pro-life provision in the bill should not distract attention from how this part of the “faith community” has become a major component of the “progressive” base that elects Democrats and keeps them in power. The facts show that most Catholics voted for Obama, and half or more of the Bishops, according to Catholic TV host Raymond Arroyo, voted for him, too. The USCCB staff is known to be overwhelmingly left-wing.

This is why some conservative Catholics think that the Catholic hierarchy is pursuing a strategy on health care that pays lip service to the pro-life cause but plays directly into Obama’s (and Creamer’s) hands.
