On 40 years of Roe v. Wade

TPN: Today is the 40^th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in all 50 states. As we remember that decision today, a dispute rages in the conservative movement. Some conservatives say we should abandon social issues all together and some say we should embrace them.

What does Roe v. Wade mean to the conservative movement?

Roe v. Wade is marked as the beginning of legalized abortion in this nation.

That is not true.

Abortion was legal in some states and illegal in others. If you have ever read the Roe decision, and I had to in law school, you can only come away with the conclusion that Harry Blackmun was either senile or had his own private stash of LSD in his chambers. Roe has got to be one of the most delusional pieces of writing ever to escape the Supreme Court.

What has the result of Roe been?

It has created the multi-billion dollar Planned Parenthood racket. It has solidified the Democrats as the Party of Corruption.

Most experts say since Roe there have been 55 million abortions in the United States. Regardless of whether you think abortion should be legal or not, think about that for a second. We are a nation of 300 million and since 1973 there have been 55 million abortions.

Does anyone think this has been a good thing?

55 million children have been aborted (murdered) since Roe v. Wade was passed.

Among those who have been aborted were some who would have been star athletes, military heroes, business leaders and who were never born.

55 Million abortions is simply appalling.

In this day and age, abortions should be almost non-existent. We have effective birth control today. If you can’t figure out how to use to birth control, you definitely have no business having sex, unless you want children.

The real result of Roe has been the creation of a cash cow for the Democrats and another massive special interest group.

In 2011, Planned Parenthood received $542 million dollars from the taxpayer. Their primary and virtually only service is abortion.

Why are American taxpayers paying this money to Planned Parenthood?

Congressman Marsha Blackburn has introduced a bill in Congress H.R. 61, which would defund Planned Parenthood.

Regardless of whether you believe abortion should be legal or not, the government has no business funding it. We have no business funding an entity that simply turns around and contributes money to Democrats who will then vote for more funding for Planned Parenthood.

Roe v. Wade has been a disaster for America. Planned Parenthood has been a disaster for America. One of the best things we can do for America is to defund Planned Parenthood.

Justin Bieber’s Mom Hopes to ‘Encourage Young Women All Over the World’ With New Anti-Abortion Movie

(TheBlaze/AP) — Justin Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, is an executive producer on an upcoming anti-abortion short film.

The makers of “Crescendo” hope to raise $10 million for pregnancy centers at screenings worldwide starting Feb. 28. Mallette herself will appear at some of these, said production company Movie to Movement on Friday.

The pop star’s mother has written and spoken extensively about the addiction and abuse that led to her teenage pregnancy.

“I knew that I had to do what it took,” the 37-year-old mother wrote in her book Nowhere but Up. “I just couldn’t abort him.”

Mallette said in a statement she hopes her involvement with “Crescendo” will “encourage young women all over the world, just like me, to let them know that there is a place to go, people who will take care of you and a safe home to live in if you are pregnant and think you have nowhere else to turn.”

Poor Justin Bieber. When he’s not the subject of a murder/castration plot or, worse, being mocked by James Franco, he’s getting embarrassed by his mom, Pattie Mallette, who executive produced a pro-life film coming out soon…

Of course, Bieber probably isn’t completely embarrassed by the move; after all, two years ago he went on the record as being pro-life (“I really don’t believe in abortion. It’s like killing a baby?”). Then again, in that same interview Bieber said “Whatever they have in Korea, that’s bad” when asked about political parties, so we probably shouldn’t put too much stock in his opinions on anything, not that any of us necessarily were.

Christians have allowed the true meaning of Christmas to be lost and co-opted. One of the greatest things you can do each year is to take part in or attend a Christmas or Live Nativity Pageant that focuses on the true story of Christmas and then to make that meaning the focus of your holiday. Gifts, decorations, parties, caroling and all the rest are great as long as we take time to focus on the true meaning of Christmas. We have allowed ourselves as a society to forget “the reason for the season”, this season and holiday as well as many others and thereby lose the significance and the value of what should be special moments and meaningful celebrations in our lives.

Some of my greatest memories of Christmas involve going to mass on Christmas Eve as a child with my family and then participating in the Glory of Christmas (and Easter) for over 10-years as a family, with my husband and daughter, at the Crystal Cathedral… which after 30-years is now dark.

Unfortunately the Crystal Cathedral Ministries only ever filmed this program once, early on: Experience the Miracle, the Glory of Christmas in the Crystal Cathedral, 1993 and restricted photos and filming of any kind, so we are blessed to have the photos above of our experience, and below are a few homemade videos I found. What a blessing it was being part of that program and watching our daughter flying for Him as one of the angels. but one of the best parts was standing out back after each performance to greet; seeing how these performances touched peoples’ hearts.

Some holidays like Christmas actually become part of the fabric of a nation, which was true of Christmas in America until we allowed political correctness to wag the dog… let the 15% tell 85% what they can and cannot do. And as Ben Stein has written more than once… he, a Jew, looks forward to the bejeweled trees, Christmas carols and an overall kinder season.

Rabbi Daniel Lapin (who founded the American Alliance of Christians and Jews) said on Glenn Beck’s Post-Thanksgiving Review Program: “Although I am Jewish and do not celebrate Christmas I respect the traditions and the holiday and I like the holiday for two good reasons: It helps the economy and it makes people better…” (95% of the money spent at Christmastime is for others… rather than for ourselves).

Lapin has spoken against the secularization of Christmas, saying that “We see obsequious regard for faiths like Judaism and even Islam, while Christianity is treated with contempt”. He is opposed to replacing the “Merry Christmas” greeting with “Happy Holidays”, saying instead “Let us all go out of our way to wish our many wonderful Christian friends a very Merry Christmas… Nationwide, Christmas Nativity scenes are banned from city halls and shopping malls but Chanukah menorahs are permitted. There is without a doubt a war on Christmas as well as on patriotism.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Damon Vix didn’t have to go to court to push Christmas out of the city of Santa Monica. He just joined the festivities.

The atheist’s anti-God message alongside a life-sized nativity display in a park overlooking the beach ignited a debate that burned brighter than any Christmas candle.

Santa Monica officials snuffed the city’s holiday tradition this year rather than referee the religious rumble, prompting churches that have set up a 14-scene Christian diorama for decades to sue over freedom of speech violations. Their attorney will ask a federal judge Monday to resurrect the depiction of Jesus’ birth, while the city aims to eject the case.

The issue before us is not an anti-gay issue.  It is a pro-freedom of speech and freedom of religion issue.  Chick-Fil-A does not discriminate against gays.  But Chick-Fil-A is a private company whose owner stand-up for their Christian beliefs.  Hello, this is America where that is allowed.  And America is still the land of the free, governed by a Bill of Rights and Constitution, where the majority of people are Christians.

Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said he believes in the natural, biblical view of marriage as being between one man and one woman.

How, in America, could that viewpoint possibly be considered controversial or discriminatory?

Have our nation’s values and culture collapsed that far?

Apparently, liberal politicians like Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel think so. Upon hearing of Cathy’s stand, radical pro-homosexual organizations and sympathizers immediately began calling for boycotts, “kiss-ins,” and other types of protests against the family-friendly national chain of restaurants.

Then, government officials from major U.S. cities like Chicago and Boston said they plan to prevent Chick-fil-A from opening new restaurants in their jurisdictions.

Demanding a public apology from Cathy, Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno said that he will deny Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in Chicago’s Logan Square. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino told the Boston Herald that he would block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the “Cradle of Liberty.”

Never one to “let a good crisis go to waste,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel followed suit. Emanuel’s statement that “Chick-fil-A’s values are not Chicago’s values” was both legally ignorant and ill-advised. Emanuel, the former Chief of Staff at the Obama White House, surely knows that viewpoint discrimination violates federal Civil Rights statutes!

++These threats of action and discrimination against Chick-fil-A because of the viewpoint of its owner are not only illegal – they are toxic to every business and businessman in America!

To deny business permits or zoning approvals to Chick-fil-A because the president of the privately-owned family business expressed his biblical view of natural marriage is outrageous.

Any city trying to ban Chick-fil-A will not win this battle. If this discrimination is challenged in court – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will be eating crow, and in large portions! Even the ACLU condemned the knee-jerk announcements by ultraliberal Mayors Emanuel and Menino!

These government officials ought to be ashamed. For a public official to threaten denial of a right to do business because the president of a private company supports natural marriage is the height of stupidity and intolerance.

Unfortunately, their response is typical of intolerant homosexual activists. They will go to any lengths to silence the majority of Americans who believe that children do best when raised in a natural family with one mom and one dad.

A legal team that specializes in religious and civil rights and the Constitution says city officials who are promising to punish Chick-fil-A restaurants for the religious beliefs followed by their chief are asking for trouble.

“These government officials ought to be ashamed. For a public official to threaten denial of a right to do business because the president of a private company supports natural marriage is the height of stupidity and intolerance,” said Mathew Staver, chief of Liberty Counsel.

The issue has turned into a firestorm over the last couple of days. Among the results? The Henson Co., creator of the Muppets characters, said it no longer would work with Chick-fil-A. The mayor of Boston publicly bashed the restaurant chain. Chicago officials said they would not want the company to operate in their wards. And “kiss-in” protests were announced in front of company outlets on college campuses.

All brought on by advocates for homosexual behavior because Dan Cathy, whose father, Truett Cathy, founded the $4 billion-plus a year business, gave an interview to the Baptist Press.

“We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that,” Cathy said.

In a separate radio interview, Dan Cathy said, “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage. I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think we can try to define what marriage is all about.”

Earlier today, Billy Graham, the longtime dean of Christian leaders in the United States, expressed his support for the Cathy family

“I want to express my support for my good friends Truett Cathy and his son Dan Cathy, and for their strong stand for the Christian faith,” he said in a statement released by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

“I’ve known their family for many years and have watched them grow Chick-fil-A into one of the best businesses in America while never compromising their values. Chick-fil-A serves each of its customers with excellence, and treats everyone like a neighbor. It’s easy to see why Chick-fil-A has become so popular across America,” he said.

Liberty Counsel noted the city officials who are on thin ice include Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno, who “said that he will deny Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in Chicago’s Logan Square. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino told the Boston Herald that he would block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the ‘Cradle of Liberty.” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel followed suit.”

“There is absolutely no evidence that Chick-fil-A has discriminated against anyone,” Staver continued. “The intolerance displayed by these government officials ought to serve as a wakeup call to the majority of Americans who support the commonsense understanding of natural marriage.

“If given the chance, these intolerant officials would silence anyone who supports natural marriage. They have placed extreme ideology over freedom,” Staver said.

“To deny business permits or zoning approvals to Chick-fil-A because the president of the privately owned family business expressed his biblical view of natural marriage is outrageous. Any city trying to ban Chick-fil-A will not win this battle,” Staver said.

But as WND reported, hundreds of thousands of people across America are pledging to support Chick-fil-A restaurants.

A Facebook campaign has been launched by Gov. Mike Huckabee seeking to build support for the chicken-sandwich chain famous for closing its stores on Sundays so employees can attend church if they choose.

Huckabee, a 2008 Republican presidential candidate, invited Americans to join him Wednesday, Aug. 1, for a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.” Some supporters are advocating showing support every Wednesday.

He noted the company now is a $4 billion a year effort with more than 1,600 stores.

“The militant homosexual advocates have launched an all out assault on Dan Cathy and Chick-fil-A, pushing for a boycott because the Cathy family has contributed to traditional marriage organizations. The attempts to hurt or destroy Chick-fil-A is nothing short of economic bullying. In the name of ‘tolerance,’ there is an effort being mounted to put pressure on people to stop eating at Chick-fil-A. Even worse is the vilification of the company and its employees. The Christian world view of Dan Cathy is being met with intolerance and vicious hate speech,” Huckabee’s announcement said.

“I ask you to join me in speaking out to your constituency via Facebook, Twitter, email, broadcast, etc., to make Wednesday, August 1 ‘Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.’ No one is being asked to make signs, speeches, or openly demonstrate. The goal is simple: Let’s affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday, August 1.”

John Hayward at Human Events said the attacks are reaching unhealthy levels.

“The name of the game being played against Chick-fil-A involved ending the discussion, by ruling one side of this important social debate completely out of order, and dismissing their beliefs as unworthy of respect. All resistance to gay marriage is instantly transmuted into personal hatred of gay people. On the other hand, criticism of traditional marriage proponents cannot be viewed as hateful, no matter how angrily it might be expressed. It’s a rigged heads-we-win, tails-you-lose game,” he said.

Chick-fil-A appears to have taken itself off the soapbox, at least for now, with a corporate statement that said: “The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 restaurants run by independent owner/operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.”

THE (SCIENTIFIC) DEATH OF JESUS

At the age of 33, Jesus was condemned to the death penalty.

At the time crucifixion was the "worst" death. Only the worst criminals condemned to be crucified. Yet it was even more dreadful for Jesus, unlike other criminals condemned to death by crucifixion, Jesus was to be nailed to the cross by His hands and feet.

Each nail was 6 to 8 inches long.

The nails were driven into His wrist. Not into His palms as is commonly portrayed.

There's a tendon in the wrist that extends to the shoulder.

The Roman guards knew that when the nails were being hammered into the wrist, that tendon would tear and break, forcing Jesus to use His back muscles to support himself so that He could breathe.

Both of His feet were nailed together.

Thus He was forced to support Himself on the single nail that impaled His feet to the cross.
Jesus could not support himself with His legs because of the pain, so He was forced to alternate between arching His back then using his legs just to continue to breathe.

Imagine the struggle, the pain, the suffering, the courage. 
Jesus endured this reality for over 3 hours.
Yes, over 3 hours!

Can you imagine this kind of suffering?

A few minutes before He died, Jesus stopped bleeding. 

He was simply pouring water from his wounds.

From common images, we see wounds to His hands and feet and even the spear wound to His side... 

But do we realize His wounds were actually made in his body.

A hammer driving large nails through the wrist, the feet overlapped and an even large nail 
hammered through the arches, then a Roman guard piercing His side with a spear. 

But before the nails and the spear, Jesus was whipped and beaten. 

The whipping was so severe that it tore the flesh from His body. 

The beating so horrific that His face was torn and his beard ripped from His face. 

The crown of thorns cut deeply into His scalp. 

Most men would not have survived this torture.  

He had no more blood to bleed out, only water poured from His wounds.

The human adult body contains about 3.5 liters (just less than a gallon) of blood. 

Jesus poured all 3.5 liters of his blood; 

He had three nails hammered into His members; a crown of thorns on His head and, beyond that, a Roman soldier who stabbed a spear into His chest. 

All these without mentioning the humiliation…

He passed after carrying His own cross for almost 2 kilometers, while the crowd spat in his face and threw stones (the cross was almost 30 kg of weight, only for its higher part, here His hands were nailed).

Jesus had to endure this experience, so that you can have free access to God.
So that your sins could be "washed" away.
All of them, with no exception!
Don't ignore this situation.

JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOU!

Do not believe that He only died for others (those who go to church or for pastors, bishops, etc).

He died for you! It is easy to pass jokes and false witness statements by e-mail, but when it comes to God, sometimes you feel ashamed to forward to others because you are worried of what they may think about you.

Accept the reality, the truth that JESUS IS THE ONLY SALVATION FOR THE WORLD.
God has plans for you, show all your friends what He experienced to save you.

I love dying Easter Eggs, and making baskets for the kids dressed in their new Sunday best as much as the next Mom, Grandma, Aunt, God-Mother or neighbor!  But let us make sure that they understand that new clothes, Easter eggs, baskets of goodies and the Easter Bunny are the fun and entertainment for Easter… not the reason for or the essence of Easter. 

If we are not taking our kids to church or Sunday school and teaching them what Christianity and the birth and death of Christ is all about, we are cheating them.  We are not doing our job as parents, grandparents and most especially Christians!!  That then rolls over to American youth not understanding the Judeo-Christian principles that the Founding Fathers of America used as a basis for the American Bill of Rights, Constitution, foundation of law and the standards for American society.  When we stopped taking our kids to church and let the Progressives re-write American history, we started to lose the country and foundation for Freedom that we knew and loved.  If you understand the Bible and true American history (from Original sources), you know that America was a God inspired nation.

One of the greatest gifts we ever received was our family being part of the casts of Glory of Easter and Glory of Christmas for the Crystal Cathedral for over 8-years, and then our daughter went on to fly several more as one of the Angels, during her college years.  It was a five week daily commitment for Easter and my husband portrayed one of the thieves on the cross who died with Christ.  There was not a day that passed that our hearts were not touched as the scene of Christ’s death was enacted.  And being part of sharing that with others and then greeting many of the audience members after the show was much more of a gift than the time spent or schedule inconveniences that people always questioned, commented on or used as excuses not to get involved themselves.

This Easter and Passover Season freedom of religion, Christianity and Judaism has been under attack not only around the world but here within the United States.  It is something that we cannot ignore!! Freedom of religion is one of the cornerstones of America and the primary reason the Pilgrims and others came here from England.  Prayer is one of our greatest weapons… if we use it!  Do you remember the story of the women of Brazil credited for saving their country by banding together in prayer?

Let us all remember and celebrate the true meaning of Easter today!!

This year Earth Day landed on the same day as Good Friday. Which one of these holidays will get more coverage in the media? Ok, don't answer that. Earth Day is already off to a head start as kids are being indoctrinated and forced to sing songs about keeping the Earth 'wild' for the future of 'great- grandchild' among other ridiculous chants, including encouraging kids to boycott big businesses. Maybe they'll start with Apple, who was just named 'least green' tech company (even though Al Gore sits on the board). Glenn plays the disturbing indoctrination and responds on radio today.

Beyond Disrespect 

The movie "Corpus Christi" is due to be released this June to August. A disgusting film set to appear in America later this year depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals! As a play, this has already been in theatres for a while.  It's called "Corpus Christi" which means "The Body of Christ".  It's revolting mockery of our Lord. But we can make a difference. That's why I am sending this e-mail to you. If you do send this around, we just might be able to prevent this film from showing in America.  Let's stand for what we believe in and stop the mockery of Jesus Christ our Savior. Where do we stand as Christians? At the risk of a bit of inconvenience, I'm forwarding this to all I think would appreciate it, too. Please help us prevent such offenses against our Lord. There is no petition to sign, no time limit, or minimum number of people to send this to.. It will take you less than 2 minutes! If you are not interested and do not have the 2 minutes it will take to do this, please don't complain when God does not have time for you because He is far busier than we are. Hey it's worth a shot! Apparently, some regions in Europe have already banned the film. All we need is a lot of prayer and a lot of e-mails. Brown | April 20, 2011 | 09:49 Easter is the quintessential Christian holiday - the celebration of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection. Although it has been celebrated by billions of people around the world for nearly 2,000 years, the mainstream media would rather celebrate the liberal holiday known as "Earth Day" and connect Easter to the abuse scandal that surrounded the Roman Catholic Church in a country where 76% of the population consider themselves active Christians, 86.2% say they are from a Christian background and America itself was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and values.  Some major Findings: Media Undermine Christian Holiday: Nearly two thirds of all stories about Easter were negative (22 out of 34). Easter Used to Attack Catholic Church: Ninety-one percent of the negative Easter stories were about the pedophilia scandal in the Roman Catholic Church. Love That Mother Nature: 100 percent of Earth Day stories were positive. Holy Week marks the seven days between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Christians around the world celebrate it by attending services, praying and piously observing the holiday. But in 2010, ABC, CBS and NBC evening news shows mentioned "Easter" primarily in connection to the pedophilia scandals that swirled around the Vatican last year, being sure to highlight the "gravest outrage," "scandal," "sexual abuse" and "crisis." Instead, the networks chose to worship something else: Mother Earth. In contrast to Easter, the 40-year-old eco-holiday Earth Day that focuses on the "plastic lying around the earth" and "going green," managed to get nothing but positive attention from the broadcast media. The Culture and Media Institute examined reports during Holy Week (Mar. 28 through Apr. 4, 2010) and Apr. 15, 2010, through Earth Day to contrast the two weeks of media coverage. Easter: a Chance to Bash Catholic Church ABC's "World News Saturday" provided the perfect juxtaposition of how the networks disparaged Easter and praised Earth Day in 2010. "This is the holiest weekend in the Christian calendar," said ABC's Dan Harris on April 3, 2010. "But Easter is providing no respite whatsoever from what may be the gravest outrage in the modern history of the Catholic Church." The next evening, Harris again used the word "outrage" saying, "on this Easter Sunday, an extraordinary effort to defend the pope amid growing public outrage over pedophile priests ... an apparent reference to the continuing crisis over pedophile priests. It was a very rare altering of the Vatican's Easter celebration." The tone of Harris' reporting was a stark contrast to that of fellow ABC anchor Diane Sawyer's April 22 Earth Day commentary. "And on this Earth Day we told you about the plastic lying around the earth," Sawyer said on "World News." "Well what if you could take it and turn it into an answered prayer for some children? One woman did just that. It's the American heart." Harris' broadcasts were just 2 examples from the 22 negative stories about Easter in a total of 34 stories the Culture and Media Institute examined. NBC "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams showed the same pattern as ABC in its reporting on the Vatican's scandal. "This, of course, is Good Friday," Williams said on April 2, 2010. "And in a service at the Vatican today there was an unusual defense of the pope and the growing sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church." NBC correspondent Anne Thompson weighed in on the scandal as well saying, "On a rainy Roman morning, the Vatican produced a typical Easter Mass with all the pomp and pageantry - until Cardinal Angelo Sodano rose to speak, offering not a prayer, but a vigorous defense of Pope Benedict, accused by some of not doing enough to protect children from abusive priests." Thompson's remarks came on Easter Sunday. She continued to discuss the crisis throughout the broadcast, later stating, "Throughout Europe, the scandal dominated Easter services … And in the pope's homeland, in Munich, the traditions of Easter, for just a day, superseded the pain many feel at the disclosures that some priests abused children for decades." But when the relatively young holiday known as "Earth Day" rolled around just 18 days later, NBC fell all over itself to promote awareness of the eco-celebration. "As we said earlier, this is Earth Day, the 40th anniversary, in fact, of what's considered the birth of the modern environmental movement," anchor Brian Williams said on "Nightly News." "On this Earth Day there was this item in the news today, a way to remind us all to take a fresh look at something we look down and see just about every day: cigarette butts. Not only are they the most common form of litter, they are filled with toxins, every one of them that can leach out into the environment and make their way into drinking water supplies and pets, among other things." Not to be outdone, the CBS "Evening News" took the opportunity to chime in on the unfortunate Catholic priest abuse scandal as well. Russ Mitchell said: "On this Easter Sunday, an unusual statement from a Vatican official in defense of the pope, Pope Benedict XVI who has been accused of not doing enough to address charges of sexual abuse in the church." Yet, "Evening News" fill-in anchor Maggie Rodriguez just couldn't seem to say anything bad about Earth Day. "Today, Earth Day turned 40, and a new CBS News poll shows that many Americans have big concerns about the future of our planet," she said on April 22. "Nearly half expect the environment to be in worse shape for the next generation." Not All Negative Easter Stories About Scandal The networks couldn't seem to produce a truly positive or even neutral story about Easter, without then immediately throwing Christians under the bus. Dan Harris' "World News Sunday" report on Easter was a prime example. "The weather was perfect here in New York City today for the annual Easter Parade," Harris said casually about the Christian holiday. "On display during the traditional stroll up Fifth Avenue, elaborate and imaginative homemade hats. Amazing some of these people could hold their heads up under all that." But Harris couldn't leave viewers with a neutral impression of Christians and Catholics - he immediately painted a negative picture of Christians with this tease: "Coming up next, the apocalyptic Christian militia jailed for plotting war against the government." Few Positive Easter Stories There were only nine positive mentions of Easter from the network news evening shows during Holy Week last year. In one of them CBS "Evening News" anchor Katie Couric wished viewers a "great weekend and a happy Easter," and it was these casual, but positive mentions of Easter that accounted for seven of the nine positive mentions. Another one came from Natalie Morales, a NBC "Nightly News" correspondent who mentioned that "In Washington this Easter Sunday, President Obama and the first family took time out for prayer and reflection before the chief executive gets back into business." Just the Latest Problem with Holy Week Coverage The Media Research Center reached out to the Catholic League for comment and President Bill Donahue had this to say about the media's treatment of Catholics: "The Catholic League has been tracking the way the media treat Holy Week for many years, and what we have unfailingly found is one of three things: a) the mainstream media do a news story, magazine article or TV special questioning the divinity of Jesus, or b) some fraud comes forth with some absurd claims doubting whether Jesus was actually raised from the dead, or c) a music video is released that is designed to tweak the sensibilities of Christians. It's all deliberate and it's all selectively targeted." Conclusion The abuse scandal that surrounded the Catholic Church in recent years is a genuine tragedy, and a scandal worthy of media attention. But the network evening news shows pushed the liberal, anti-Catholic agenda by devoting most of their Holy Week coverage of Easter to highlight that some Catholic priests abused children. By comparison, Earth Day has nowhere near the national or international prominence that Easter has. While the United Nations designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day, the United States does not recognize this day as a federal holiday. Easter, on the other hand, though always observed on a Sunday is recognized in schools as students are on "Spring Break," formerly called "Easter Break" and the two week Congressional "Spring Recess." Methodology 2011 marks a unique year in that "Earth Day" falls right in the middle of "Holy Week." The Culture and Media Institute analyzed how the media treated the two holidays last year. In 2010, ABC, CBS and NBC evening shows denigrated Christians by mentioning Easter only in connection with the priest abuse scandals 65 percent of the time, during Holy Week. By contrast, the week of Earth Day garnered five mentions and, predictably, every single report was positive. There were a total of 34 stories about Easter, of those 22 were negative. Of the negative stories, 91 percent (20 stories) were about the Catholic priest pedophilia scandal. Only 9 Easter stories were positive and of those, 7 were casual mentions rather than stories. The other 3 stories were neutral or generic references to Easter as a time of the year. There were five stories about Earth Day all of which glowingly featured the Earth-celebrating holiday.
