After 4 years of Common Core – Test Scores Plummet

After 4 years of Common Core – Test Scores Plummet

h/t to George King and MJ

[Common Core’s] misplaced stress on informational texts reflects the limited expertise of Common Core’s architects and sponsoring organizations in curriculum and in teacher’s training.… A diminished emphasis on literature in secondary grades makes it unlikely that American students will study a meaningful range of culturally and historically significant literary works before graduation.

After 4 years of Common Core – test scores plummet:  GULFPORT, Miss. - A Common Core school district – Gulfport, Mississippi – is covering up failing test scores.

At a recent meeting by Superintendent Glen East, parents were told that the test scores of the district had improved dramatically under the implementation of the Common Core curriculum.  The Superintendent made his claims regarding dramatic academic improvement of all students by using ONLY the scores of the  top 150 students.

In his comments to parents, Mr. East stated,

“This district already had national average ACT scores. We’ve now gone with our top students, our top 150 students, we’ve gone from a 23 average to almost a 25 in over four years. That is not a new ACT, that is the ACT we are currently working with. We’ve improved reading achievement for all students. When I look at that data about how we’ve grown over the past four years and the success we’ve had, if you are in my shoes, you have to celebrate what you are doing. Very Powerful!”

However, a couple of weeks later at a subsequent event, it seems that parents had a chance to research the data that the Superintendent had reported. Upon closer inspection of the data, parents found that the Superintendent completely misrepresented the data, and that the results were worse, not better. They were not simply a little worse, but a lot worse.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan should take note. This father does not look much like a white suburban mother. Chris Ashley is the pastor at a local Baptist Church who has a son attending the Gulfport schools. He opens his talk with congratulating the district on the gains they had made. After a brief applause from the audience, he goes into the data.

“According to the Mississippi Department of Education website and their stats, and I can leave them here with Mr. East or all you all can go and get them yourself, everywhere else we are dropping. From 2009 to 2012, almost every grade has dropped in their scores. Not all of them, but overall our test scores have dropped.

“...Greatschools.org you can go there, they’ve pretty much done all the  math for you, they tell you the percentages of students that have scored proficient or better.  Third grade language arts, we’ve dropped 4%, this is all 2009-2012. Math 3rd grade we’ve dropped 6%. Fourth grade language arts, we’ve went up 8% but we dropped 5% in math. Fifth grade we dropped  5% in language arts and 6% in math. Sixth grade we went up 1% in language arts, we dropped 2% in math. Seventh grade and eighth grade, went up 8 and 4, and eighth grade went up 4 and 12.

“The 5th grade MST test we did well at we up we went up 9 and 17 points.”

Well, that is good, right? But what about on the very SAT and ACT that the school district touts?

“The SATP from 2009-2012  in Algebra we dropped 34%. In 2009-2012 in English  we dropped 18%, in Biology we dropped 46% in those same years, and in history we dropped 38%. You see I heard a lot about our ACT scores and how great they are from the 10th grade and that is awesome. I didn’t check the 10th grade scores, but I did check the graduating seniors.... From 2007-20011 we’ve dropped 1% in English, 0.7% in math, we are level in reading, we’ve dropped a half a percent in science and a half a percent in composite scores.

“Now, we all know we can take data and we can twist to show what you want it to show. I took the numbers straight from there and said I didn’t give you just the 10th grade or just the 7th and 8th grade where it looks good. I gave it all to you.”

Then this parent details what the No Child Left Behind testing shows, that Gulfport schools appear to be falling behind.

“I have our district report card  here from the No Child Left Behind, and we have dropped.  We have dropped without a doubt. Every grade 3-8th in mean score scale, everyone one  has dropped. The 3rd-8th grade in language arts, and math, and science, the mean scale score, we have dropped from the previous year, every grade. We have dropped in  algebra in the high school, we’ve dropped, uh, we’ve dropped in the mean score in every except biology we stayed even 648.

“Like I said, I have all kind of common core curriculum questions, but what I don’t like is somebody to screw the numbers and tell us we are doing good when we are really not doing good.”

What was the answer to this parent from Dr. Carla Evers, Director of Instructional Programs?

“I looked at the Greatschools website, it will show the Gulfport schools going up, and then all of a sudden we just dive like we went off a cliff and stopped teaching. Well, we did. We stopped teaching the state standards and we shifted to the common core standards state standards. So that should have happened because the things that are on that test were not what we were now teaching in our classrooms. So we understood that, the state department put that in our newspaper, but for some reason they still put those test scores on their state website.”

Now, what material would it been that is no longer taught in the Gulfport schools? Reading? Addition? Subtraction? Multiplication? These are huge score drops. Further, the ACT was the same test that Superintendent East had just bragged about, so how is it that it can be used to brag about improvement for one grade, but not erosions in learning in another grade?

Even worse, the school district is upset that the State Department of Education failed to hide the scores from the state website?  This is outrageous!

If the ACT and SATP are not valid measures of student learning in Gulfport, MS, then what measure is? Do the colleges in Mississippi no longer accept the ACT and the SAT?

Activists at Stop Common Core Mississippi Facebook page noted,

“Common Core clearly fails to teach the foundational material needed to pass tests. Whose fault is it that the failures was leaked to the public?”

California Schools Are Now Turning Into Government Indoctrination Centers

That’s Right Folks… CA Public Schools Are Spending $990,000 To Train Kids To Sell Obamacare

Marion Algier – Ask Marion -  h/t to TLA

One of the worst things about totalitarian socialist type regimes is that they specifically target children to be their propaganda arms. Instead of trying to sell their ideas to the parents, they sell them to the kids, who then in-turn police their parents.  Children are obviously the perfect spokespeople, since they’re blind to problems, corruption, and in the case of your public school educated kids…blind to history.

California is now sending money to schools to indoctrinate children into being spokespeople for ObamaCare.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (“LAUSD”) is receiving a $990,000 grant from the state of California (which is releasing prisoners right and left to help control their debt) to train teens to sell ObamaCare to their families. This money is just a part of the $37 million total California is spending to try to get people to cooperate with ObamaCare, despite its many and obvious problems.

obama-schools-indoctrination

American Thinker: So in another desperate attempt "the Obama administration created a marketing campaign for Obamacare that made it cool and hip" by "reaching out to the NFL, the NBA and Hollywood for help, and counting down the days to Oct. 1, when enrollment in the exchanges officially begins."  Further, "The administration is in a good position to secure splashy endorsements, as Obama's 2008 and 2012 campaigns had a deep bench of celebrity surrogates."

Well ok, nothing personal but those who will be influenced by endorsements from sports figures and entertainment types are probably already in agreement with the President Barack Hussein Obama (D) agenda; these plugs will merely further validate and rationalize previously held beliefs.   And for those who disagree, especially some of the owners and major stockholders, well, in true Chicago Way fashion the Obama administration has ways of making them agree.

In a recent update after hearing from the public the NFL says it has no (or changed) plans to promote ObamaCare

We have responded to the letters we received from members of Congress to inform them we currently have no plans to engage in this area and have had no substantive contact with the administration about PPACA’s implementation.

Obamacare-In-The-Moon-SC But what is truly disturbing--actually repellent and frightening--is the government's plan to abuse the concept of public education by turning public schools into indoctrination factories, forcing children to spout the joys of Obamacare.  Or else!

In California, the educrats of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in the country with over 640,000 students, will be force feeding students to sell Obamacare to their families, funded by a nearly million dollar state grant (though the state is broke) from Covered California according to this article in Human Events

The district listed as a primary outcome for its project, "Teens trained to be messengers to family members."

Covered California spokeswoman Sarah Soto-Taylor said staff have not questioned this goal.

"We have confidence that the model LA Unified brought to the table will be successful in reaching our target population, which includes family members of students," she said.

LAUSD will also use tax-paid staff to promote ObamaCare through phone calls to students' homes, in-class presentations, and meetings with employees eligible for ObamaCare's taxpayer-covered healthcare, the grant award says.

Unpaid Propagandizers

The district listed adult education students, part-time, and contract employees as its target population. Teens will be trained to be messengers not to those groups, but to their own families, to get more people enrolled in taxpayer-subsidized healthcare.

If the project is successful, Los Angeles families can expect more use of students to push government-preferred messaging.

"Teens are part of a 'pilot' program to test whether young people can be trained as messengers to deliver outreach and limited education to family and friends in and around their homes," said Gayle Pollard-Terry, a LAUSD spokesman, in an email. "Teens will be educating adults that they already know (e.g., family or friends) and not other adults."

'Paid in the Rear'

Grant recipients like LAUSD will be held accountable by the state for fulfilling their promised activities for outreach, said Larry Hicks, another LAUSD spokesman.

"At a minimum, grantees will be required to submit to Covered California monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on their activities and progress towards agreed upon outcomes. If project benchmarks are not met, grantees may be required to submit additional ad hoc reports upon Covered California's request. Grantees will also be required to report any proposed adjustments to their approved outreach and education plan using the information management system... Additionally, field monitors will be assigned to grantees to verify their progress," Hughes said.

Disturbing comparisons with using children and government education facilities to deliver "government-preferred messaging"  in the past and in other societies today instantly spring to mind.  And so do the questions.

If the parents disagree with ObamaCare and their children's message will the children then be compelled to report them to the "field monitors...assigned to grantees to verify their progress"?

What if a parent hangs up on an intrusive government caller or worse not so politely, or even politely, argues with the "outreach" drone?"  Can parents protest the "use of students to push government-preferred messaging"?  If so, will the parentsr be compelled to attend parent-school meetings and labeled unfit and abusive?

And what will happen to the students if they mock their assignment of "educating adults they already know", or educate their trainers on the perils of Obamacare, or refuse "to be trained as messengers" or even just don't do their  "homework" as students are wont to do?  What if kids fail at "educating adults they already know"?  All of these outcomes happen every day in homes and schools across America over minor issues.  Will the students be shamed and punished by teachers and/or the school administration for their failure to do the assignment?   Will the other kids make fun of them?

Perhaps even in California some teachers or administrators will have doubts about violating the basic education principles of a free society which prohibit political advocacy of only one viewpoint.  If they voice their concerns about this misuse of the schools or if they too express concerns about ObamaCare will they be fired and sent to special in service workshops or re education camps, joining protesting parents and students?  What will happen to their children, their families?

Unfortunately, these questions and others similar to them are not far fetched or speculative.  Oh sure, the practices against dissenters will probably not outwardly mimic those of North Korea, Nazi Germany or Communist Russia - certainly no parent or student will be executed.  But... Obama Youth is live and well!

Woe to those who publicly deviate from politically correct or government approved thought. Using vulnerable students "to push government-preferred messaging" though is a new low. And alas, this is probably not even the lowest of the desperate, all encompassing government mandates regarding ObamaCare, the environment or any other "government-preferred" thought or action.

Common Core… How it is Dumbing Down America’s School Children

COMMON CORE: A Cookie-Cutter, One-Size-Fits All Education Standards – Part 1

By: Terresa Monroe-Hamilton – The NoisyRoom

Today, I caught Glenn Beck on The Blaze and his excellent showcasing of Obama’s Common Core Standards that are now in 45 states, including my state of Idaho. Common Core is Marxism for children. It is state run propaganda and is meant to dumb down and control our little ones. It is evil and it has been a long time coming. Obama pushed it through slyly and quickly after coming into office, but I can tell you, this has been brewing since at least the 1990s.

A little background… When my children were in school in the 1990s, my husband and I requested to see the school curriculum for their school in Las Vegas, Nevada. We were refused and basically told we were too dumb to understand what the teachers were instructing our son and daughter in. The last straw came when they wanted to put my daughter in the second grade on Ritalin instead of disciplining her. I was pulled in front of four teachers and accused of not raising my daughter correctly, as well as basically being an abusive and stupid parent. I promptly told these teachers that they could pound sand and pulled our children (our son was in third grade at the time) out of school that very same day. I left the Fortune 500 and home schooled both of them till high school and in retrospect, should have kept them out even then. My children could not do the simplest of math or read when we pulled them out. I tested them and started them all over again with the ABEKA home schooling system, which at the time, cost a great deal of money. The children were tested by the state within a week of being pulled out and because they could not read or do math, the state threatened to remove our children, even though it was their damn lack of teaching that had produced this. Well, we knuckled down and by the end of the following year, both kids were excellent readers and were caught up in math. I never heard from the state again. My son went on to be a gifted software developer and although my daughter is still trying to find her way in the world, she is a talented artist and a survivor. Now on to the present matter at hand.

My friend and fellow blogger Michelle Malkin has done a set of four in-depth articles on reporting on the Common Core Standards as well as additional pieces providing more information. Her work is very well done. Before her write-ups, I would wager most parents had never heard of Common Core. There are now many teachers who are quitting and/or standing up against this Progressive travesty that is intent on corrupting our schools and students. Here are some videos explaining the Common Core Standards:

I will tell you that George Soros and the Tides Foundation along with other major Progressive organizations and the Obama Administration are behind all of this monstrosity. Gee, I’m sooo surprised. Educational policies are supposed to lie with the states, so the government coercing the states to carry the Common Core Standards violates the Constitution. The tracking database violates privacy at every turn as well. I strongly recommend you click on the links below and read what Michelle has written and fight to drive out the Common Core Standards from your state. While Obama took us from one emergency to the next, he was slipping in the back door to destroy our children who are the building blocks of the country. Get your children out of the public schools now and fight this at the state level. It is almost too late.

Michelle Malkin:

Many of you have expressed concern about the influence of the Common Core Standards and it's connection to Race to the Top. I am attaching a letter from Paul Horton, a history teacher at my old alma mater, The University of Chicago Laboratory School. He is also State Liaison of the Illinois Council for History Education. Mr. Horton is a serious, passionate teacher of history who teaches from history books and not textbooks. He believes that the Common Core has been corrupted by undue external influence. Mr. Horton believes that Pearson LLC and others are net beneficiaries of Common Core. Mr. Horton is demanding a full investigation of undue influence. If you agree with Mr. Horton that there should be a full investigation of Common Core simply e-mail me and I will pass your name as a joint signatory of the attached letter.

Citizens Against Corporate Collusion in Education (CACCE)

As American parents, students, educators, and concerned citizens, we are united in opposition to the agenda of those corporate, foundation, and government interests that seek to influence local district boards of education, state boards of education, state governments, governors, and the Office of the Secretary of Education. This agenda calls for standardization of national curricula in the form of the Common Core Standards mandated in the Federal initiative “Race to the Top,” data-driven assessments of students and teachers, and the creation and implementation of standardized discrete item testing to measure compliance to the Common Core Standards. The president of the College Board’s recent announcement that a new SAT will be created to measure Common Core Standards skills proficiency also alarms us. In addition, the Secretary of Education’s former press secretary has recently used the “revolving door” of public office to acquire a job with a company that is related to Pearson LLC.

We demand transparency and public accountability for decisions that are being made on the above issues without open hearings or public debate on the influence of corporate lobbying and marketing at local, state, and federal levels. We strongly suspect the existence of quid pro quo understandings between the current Secretary of Education and Bill Gates, The Bill and Melina Gates Foundation, The College Board and David Coleman, The Educational Testing Service (ETS), and Pearson Education LLC that amount to collusion between a Federal Public servant(s) and corporate interests that appear to be working together to limit competition in an open marketplace.

We therefore resolve:

1)  That State Attorneys General investigate possible quid pro quo agreements between the above parties and members of state boards of education and commissioners,

2)  That State Attorneys General investigate lobbying of the above parties to determine whether bribery laws have been violated,

3)  That all state governments conduct investigations of the contributions of Pearson LLC, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, the Walton Family Foundation, and the Students First Foundation to local school board elections and the elections or appointments of state education commissioners and state boards of education,

4)  And that each state file a complaint with the Anti-Trust Division of the Department of Justice in Washington preliminary to discovery of evidence of possible collusion of the above parties.

5)  We call for a Joint House-Senate Committee to be formed to investigate possible collusion and influence peddling between the above parties.

6)  We call for the Attorney General of the United States to select an independent prosecutor to investigate the possibility of quid pro quo dealings and collusion between the parties above.

7)  We understand that the Tunney Act does not apply to this case and we argue that is precisely why collusion is involved, to avoid merger or the appearance of merger that would trigger a court hearing.

8)  We strongly recommend that the Special Prosecutor (6) investigate all contracts let by the Department of Education to Pearson Education LLC.

9)  We  strongly recommend that all State Attorneys General investigate all state contracts let by Pearson LLC.

Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt served as the head of policy at the Department of Education during the first administration of President Reagan, and has since become a treasure trove for a wealth of information on the secret agendas working against America– not the least of which is the secret society Skull and Bones– as well as a coordinated plan to undermine education, eradicate individualism and brainwash the masses to create a subservient population ruled by the super-elite.

Last year, Infowars researchers conducted many hours of exclusive interviews with Charlotte Iserbyt at her home in Maine, including a thorough examination of many archive documents never before seen by the public, forgotten books with important hidden history and other relics, and even the official membership lists from Yale’s Skull & Bones rosters- which Iserbyt herself leaked to the public through author Antony Sutton.

Infowars then released two video presentations, both of which have been among the most detailed, researched and significant that this website has released– the first on the Secret History of Western Education, and the second, Secrets of Skull & Bones Revealed.

Together, with the exclusive PrisonPlanet.tv interview, it is the ultimate research companion to share with friends, family, colleagues and contacts so they can understand the truth about our world.

Now, Charlotte Iserbyt has re-issued and revised her seminal work, The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America, a book replete with a lifetime of study aimed at behind the scenes manipulation of America’s schools– aimed at re-engineering the future of the United States. With the hope of putting that information in the hands of all patriotic Americans, Iserbyt has worked long hours from retirement to condense that information and re-print this essential work in a presentable format that anyone can read. Psychological techniques of domination. Secret mergers with the Soviet Union. A plan to dumb down the people and destroy the U.S. economy It’s all documented, but it’s something you were never told in the classroom, on television, or in the political arena.

The revised and abridged edition of the deliberate dumbing down of america is the updated and smaller version of Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt’s original, now out of print, masterpiece about the American education system. This revised and abridged edition is Internet interactive and allows you to access the abridged material online. Most importantly, it includes a new “Update” chapter which covers the long-planned institutionalization of three new activities that have occurred since the publication of the original book in 1999.

Author Charlotte Iserbyt is the ultimate whistle blower. As former Senior Policy Advisor in the U.S. Department of Education, she blew the whistle in the `80s on government activities withheld from the public. Her inside knowledge will help you protect your children from controversial educational methods and programs.

This book is organized as a chronological history of the past 100+ years of education reform. Each chapter takes a period of history and recounts the significant events, including important geopolitical and societal contextual information. Citations from government plans, policy documents, and key writings by leading reformers record the rise of the modern education reform movement. Americans of all ages will welcome this riveting expose of what really happened to what was once the finest education system in the world.

The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America: Revised and Abridged Edition exposes how American social engineers have systematically gone about destroying the intellect of millions of American children for the purpose of leading the American people into a socialist world government controlled by behavioral and social scientists. It documents the gradual decline of our once academically successful education system into one devoted to training compliant children to be used by government and industry. The successful implementation of this fascist-socialist philosophy of education will spell the end of the American dream of individual freedom and opportunity.

This powerful book will change forever the way you look at your child’s education.

Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt served as the head of policy at the Department of Education during the first administration of [President] Ronald Reagan. While working there she discovered a long-term strategic plan by the tax-free foundations to transform America from a nation of rugged individualists and problem solvers to a country of servile, brainwashed minions who simply regurgitate what- ever they are told. We now present to you the Secret History of Western Education: the Scientific Destruction of Minds.

Onscreen text: On November 25, 1910, Andrew Carnegie established a 10 million dollar endowment to “hasten the abolition of international war, the foulest blot upon our civilization,”.

He selected a board of 28 trustees and directed them to use, “the widest discretion as to measures and policies they shall from time to time adopt,” in carrying out the purpose of the fund.

In the early 1950s, the Reece Commission led by Norman Dodd, uncovered minutes from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace dated 1910.

Charlotte Iserbyt [reading from Lines of Credit: Ropes of Bondage by Robert H. Goldsborough (Washington Dateline Publishers, Baltimore, Maryland, 1989)]:

The minutes reveal that in 1910 the Carnegie trustees asked themselves this question:

“Is there any way known to man more effective than war to so alter the life of an entire people?”

For a year the trustees sought an effective “peace- ful” method to “alter the life of an entire people”; but ultimately, they concluded that war was the most effective way to change people.

Iserbyt: World War I — horrible [15 million deaths and 20 million wounded] — made every other war look like nothing!… They sent a confidential message to President Wilson insisting that the war not be ended too quickly. After the war the Carnegie Endowment trustees reasoned if they could get control of education in the United States, they would be able to prevent a return to the way of life as it had been prior to the war; and they recruited the Rockefeller Foundation to assist in such a monumental task.

Iserbyt: [reading quote from Bertrand Russell’s The Impact of Science on Society (Columbia U. Press, 1951)]:
“Education should aim at destroying free will so that pupils thus schooled, will be incapable throughout the rest of their lives of thinking or acting otherwise than as their schoolmasters would have wished. . . . Influences of the home are obstructive; and in order to condition students, verses set to music and repeatedly intoned are very effective. . . . It is for a future scientist to make these maxims precise and to discover exactly how much it costs per head to make children believe that snow is black. When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for more than one generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen.”

Onscreen clip of a 1930s era instructor lecturing teachers:
“Young people cannot be trusted to form their own opinion. It’s our job to tell them!”

I had never intended to become involved in the battle that all of us are involved in. I had no idea anything was wrong with the way the country was going as I was growing up. Even during my foreign service experience [I was basically unaware of the strange direction in which our nation was being directed] I found myself mysteriously — (I would say the good Lord works in wondrous ways) — being put in spots, around the world or in my country, where extraordinary things were taking place under the guise of “change.” We’ve all heard that so much; from the Obama administration, Bill Clinton — he was the first one to mention “change agents,” etc. For some reason I was plucked out. I found myself being sort of pushed.

My name is Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt. My maiden name is Thomson. My husband, who I want to give great credit to at this point, was Belgian, from the Flemish part of Belgium. I met him — I’ll explain that later — in Europe when I was working at the Embassy in Brussels. Without my late husband’s help throughout the last [40] years, certainly when we came back to Maine [in 1970], my work never would have happened . . . He had been highly educated in Europe and he understood the whole plan! In fact, about five years after we had come back to the United States someone gave me Gary Allen’s book None Dare Call It Conspiracy. I was on the school board [in Camden, Maine] and this lady called me. She loved the work I was doing on the school board

War on U.S. Homeschoolers Escalates

State can snatch kids thanks to Supreme Court

WND: Handcuffs32-340x174[1]Justices on the U.S. Supreme Court, caught up in the high-profile Obamacare arguments that started today, have refused to intervene in a case where deputies threatened parents with the forced removal of their children unless they agreed to let social workers, who did not have a warrant or probable case, search their home.

The stunning conclusion came in a lawsuit brought on behalf of John and Tiffany Loudermilk, who sued officials after a confrontation at their Maricopa County, Ariz., home in 2005.

A district court judge ruled a reasonable person would believe the Loudermilks’ decision to allow social workers to search their home was coerced, in violation of the 4th Amendment, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the search was proper.

The case may not be finished yet, as the opinion from the 9th Circuit was unpublished, which means that it is not binding on future cases. Also, when the deputies appealed to the 9th Circuit for immunity, the social workers who also were sued did not, and that part of the case remains on hold at the district court level.

James Mason, chief counsel for the Home School Legal Defense Association, which brought the case on behalf of the family, told WND that the group will consult with the family and soon make a determination on the next step.

But he said the result is disappointing, because no matter the status of the appeal, the situation did develop, and the threats were made in order to give the social workers what they wanted.

The HSLDA described the situation: “For 40 terrifying minutes, this homeschooling couple had asserted their Fourth Amendment right to be free from an unreasonable search of their home. The two investigative social workers were eventually joined by six uniformed sheriff’s deputies who were called because the social workers considered the Loudermilks to be ‘uncooperative.’”

Then social workers played their “ace-in-the-hole” and threatened the parents that their five children would be placed in state custody immediately if they did not allow the search.

The case had developed after a still-anonymous tipster told authorities that there was a danger to the children in the new home. Two months later, social services arrived unannounced at the home and explained that it was an emergency because social workers decided it was an emergency at that point.

“In the two months between receiving the anonymous report and arriving unannounced on the Loudermilks’ front porch, social services clearly never believed that the situation needed emergency intervention,” HSLDA asserted. “No one ever asked a judge for a court order. But when it came time for the social workers to complete their investigation, the family’s Fourth Amendment rights just got in the way.”

It was social workers Rhonda Cash and Jenna Cramer who appeared at the home unannounced and threatened to take the family’s five children.

“She (Cash) appeared to believe that her simple inability to determine the children’s living conditions was sufficient grounds for her to remove the children from their parents,” the petition to the high court explained. That’s even though the social workers were allowed to talk to the children to see that they were fine.

The social workers called on the deputies to reinforce the threats with the force of law.

“Faced with unrelenting ultimatum that the officers would physically remove the children from the home unless they were admitted, together with a significant show of force, John felt that he had no option besides allowing the search of his home. He believed that he would be arrested and the children removed if he continued to refuse… Tiffany believed her children would be immediately removed from the home if she did not allow the social workers and officers to search her home,” the appeal stated.

The ultimate search took only minutes and uncovered no issues, showing that the “tip” was wrong.

“In this case, the lead law enforcement officer concluded that there was no basis for suggesting that exigent circumstances existed which would support a warrantless entry,” the brief explained.

Mason suggested that the outcome of the confrontation could provide a ripple effect for families confronted by authorities investigating anonymous tips in a variety of scenarios.

Social services threaten homeschooling parents

Hearing to target family whose son taken by police

Annie and Domenic Johansson

Social services workers who had police snatch a 7-year-old boy from his parents while they were aboard a jetliner preparing to move to the mother's home country of India because he was being homeschooled have called for a court hearing where they apparently will seek to terminate the parents' rights completely.

That word has come from officials with the Home School Legal Defense Association, which along with the Alliance Defense Fund already has elevated the dispute involving Christer and Annie Johannson and their son, Domenic, of Sweden to the Europe Court of Human rights.

Find out why classes seem so different these days, in "The Harsh Truth About Public Schools"

Christer Johannson told WND by email this week that he got a letter from the court explaining social workers wished "to move custody of Domenic to the foster family."

Domenic, now 9, has been in the custody of social services, and in foster homes, in Sweden ever since 2009 when he was snatched from a jetliner he and his parents had boarded in order to move to India.

Michael Donnelly, director of international relations for the HSLDA, told WND, "The only way I can think of describing the way the Swedish social and judicial systems have treated the Johansson family is barbaric – the harm done to them is beyond comprehension.

"Their most basic of human rights have been violated and no civilized country should permit this kind of treatment," he continued. "If the Swedish judicial system permits the termination of the Johansson's parental rights because of homeschooling, missed vaccinations and a few cavities it will have become the darkest of regimes for families in Western Europe."

Christer and Domenic Johansson

That would be an accomplishment, as homeschoolers who fled persecution in Germany already have been granted asylum in the United States because of that persecution.

"It is deplorable that the European Court of Human Rights has not acted on the petitions before it in this case and that other governments and human rights organizations have not called on Swedish authorities to investigate and correct this gross miscarriage of justice," said Donnelly.

"We are asking our members and friends to beg with Swedish authorities for this family's immediate reunification. The lives of this child and his parents depend on it."

Officials with the American groups working on behalf of the Johannsons have assembled a petition webpage for those interested in expressing their alarm over the situation to the Swedish government.

"It is an outrage that a 'free' country would rip apart this family simply because they do not conform with the government's mold," the petition states. "The egregious human rights violation needs to be rectified IMMEDIATELY. The social workers who made this decision ought to be dismissed and Domenic restored to his parents with an official apology."

"Abducting Domenic and imprisoning him from the loving family he has known all his life is not helping him. Rather, it has most likely caused irreparable harm to him in all aspects of his being, the results of which he will have to suffer with for the rest of his life," wrote Linda Long as she signed the petition.

Others on the site accused the government of child abuse and described the situation as an outrage.

The issue also has been raised before the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe at its annual human rights meeting.

WND has reported that several other cases where children were taken by authorities in Sweden were resolved over recent months when parents had a private detective literally abduct their own children from social services and reunite the families in another country.

That work drew the qualified praise of Ruby Harrold-Claeson, president of the Nordic Committee for Human Rights, which was founded in Copenhagen in 1996. The group aims to "increase the rights and freedoms of private individuals and their families and strengthen respect for basic human rights and fundamental freedoms in the Nordic countries."

Harrold-Claeson has been involved in some of the most notorious child-custody cases, includingthe Johansson case.In fact, her involvement so alarmed local judicial officials that they ordered the Johansson family to be represented by an attorney of the court's choosing instead of Harrold-Claeson.

WND also reportedthat the father, Christer Johansson, was jailed for two months for taking Domenic home from court-ordered foster care for a visit last Thanksgiving.

The case developed in mid-2009 when social services and police forcibly took custody of Domenic, then 7, because they worried he was homeschooled. The local courts later denied the parents the legal representation they sought from Harrold-Claeson, demanding instead they be represented by a government-approved attorney. The courts ultimately ruled the state must keep custody of Domenic.

Harrold-Claeson said it was strange that social service agents don't realize that their interventions in families by removing the children and placing them in foster homes among total strangers are more traumatizing than the eventual problems of the parents.

She also said Swedish authorities believe "children are the property of the state to be bought and sold as commodities. Taking children into care and placing them in foster homes is an … industry in which children's and the parents and relatives and their health – both physical and mental – is destroyed beyond repair."

She told WND that the state "has decided to usurp the powers of the parents and replace parental authority over children by delivering them into the hands of the civil servants, who per definition should be servants, not masters."

She called on Americans to condemn such practices and watch their own backs, since she's seen similar practices developing in the U.S.

The case also is being followed by a blog called FriendsofDomenic.

Gustaf Hofstedt, president of the local social services board in Gotland, Sweden, where the family lives, earlier told WND by telephone from Sweden that there is more to the dispute than homeschooling, but he refused to explain.

"I understand the public debate has been that is a case that is only concerning the fact of homeschooling," he told WND. "But that is not the case."

Asked to explain, he said, "I can't answer that question because of secrecy."

Obama's Back-to-School Speech Blacked Out After Parents Complained

AP  -  By Heather Carney, Naples Daily News

Public schools in Broward County will show President Barack Obama live. Schools in Palm Beach County are showing today’s back-to-school speech live, too. Students in Lee County public schools will also hear what the President has to say live.

Other Florida school districts like Hendry and Miami-Dade are leaving the live showing up to the discretion of individual school principals.

But Collier County Public Schools decided that none of the district’s schools will show the President’s education pep-talk live.

The back-to-school speech has been a politically charged controversy in Collier County ever since Obama first addressed students in 2009. He will give his third back-to-school address today at 1:30 p.m.

Collier schools didn’t show it then; nor will they show it now.

“In the past, this event was somewhat controversial,” said Beth Thompson, chief instructional officer with the district. “Parents called-in and said they did not want children to watch the speech.”

She said Superintendent Kamela Patton and a team of district administrators made the decision not to show the speech live. Instead, the district will give teachers the opportunity to share the speech at a later day if it fits with the curriculum.

“We’re trying to maximize the message,” said Patton. “We want teachers to show it in a controlled setting.”

Lee and Collier schools are giving parents the chance to “opt-out” from watching the speech, whether they watch it live or at a later date.

Thompson and Patton explained that teachers can present the message as a resource for history, speech writing, oral techniques or for other instructional purposes.

Joseph Burke, Superintendent of Lee County Public Schools, thinks it’s important to make the speech available to all students.

“The President clearly defines what it means to have a good public education system,” said Burke.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools aired the speech live the past two years. Before taking the Collier County superintendent job, Patton worked in Miami-Dade Public Schools for 24 years.

So then, why the decision not to show the speech live in Collier County?

“I know that historically we haven’t shown it. I always want to be sensitive of the past,” Patton said.

School board members and local party representatives are keeping their mouths shut. No one wants to admit that the decision is a political one.

County voter registration numbers show that Collier County has double the number of registered Republicans than

Democrats – 89,603 to 44,334. Lee County has 157,876 registered Republicans and 107,196 registered Democrats.

School board member Barbara Berry said the board should not be involved in the district’s decision.

“The running of the schools is left up to the district. This is not a political decision. This decision shouldn’t be up to the board,” Berry said.

Democratic national party chairwoman Sandra McClinton remembers there being “a big hassle” about the speech in past years.

“If you can’t trust the President to talk to your children, who can you?” Mclinton said.

She said that since the students are not of voting age, the President’s political affiliation shouldn’t make a difference.

“The students should be able to hear an even line,” she said. “I would trust any of our presidents to speak to the students.”

Attempts to reach the Collier County Republican executive committee Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Obama is not the first President to directly address students. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush gave an address to schools nationwide. Ronald Reagan also answered questions from students at the White House in 1986. The session aired nationally.

In last year’s back-to-school speech, some of Obama’s comments included:

“You future is in your hands. Your life is what you make of it. And nothing – absolutely nothing – is beyond your reach. So as you’re willing to dream big. So long as you’re willing to work hard. So long as you’re willing to stay focused on your education.

“The farther you go in school, the farther you’ll go in life.

“We shouldn’t be embarrassed by the things that make us different. We should be proud of them. Because it’s the things that make us different that make us who we are. And the strength and character of this country have always come from our ability recognize ourselves in one another, no matter who we are, or where we come from, what we look like, or what abilities or disabilities we have.”

This year’s speech may make an educational impact on students. Or it may not.

Stupid In America…..

When school children start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.” Albert Shanker, (President Teachers Union)

(John Stossel) School spending has gone through the roof and test scores are flat. While most every other service in life has gotten  faster, better, and cheaper, one of the most important things we buy –  education — has remained completely stagnant, unchanged since we started  measuring it in 1970.

Why no improvement?  Because K-12 education is a government monopoly and  monopolies don’t improve.

The government-school monopoly claims: Education is too important to leave to the free market. At a teachers’ union rally, even actor Matt Damon showed up to deride market competition as “MBA style thinking.”

“Competition may be okay for selling movies and cell phones, but education is different,” says the establishment. Learning is complex. Parents aren’t real “customers” because they don’t have the expertise to know which school is best. They don’t know enough about curricula, teachers’ credentials, etc. That’s why public education must be centrally planned by government “experts”.

Those experts have been in charge for years. They are what school reformers call the “Blob.” Jeanne Allen from the Center for Education Reform says for years attempts at reform have run, “smack into federations, alliances, departments, councils, boards, commissions, panels, herds, flocks and convoys, that make up the education industrial complex, or the Blob.

Taken individually they were frustrating enough, each with its own bureaucracy, but taken as a whole they were (and are) maddening in their resistance to change. Not really a wall — they always talk about change — but more like quicksand, or a tar pit where ideas slowly sink.

And the most powerful part of the Blob is the teachers’ union.  (read more)

Education Watch: $500 Million Obama Administration Program Will Help Kids 'Sit Still' in Kindergarten

Wednesday, May 25, 2011
By James Zilenziger

Kathleen Sebelius

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius speaks in Seattle on Feb. 9, 2011. (AP Photo)

(CNSNews.com) – Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told CNSNews.com on Wednesday that the administration's new $500 million early learning initiative is designed to deal with children from birth onward to prevent such problems as 5-year olds who "can't sit still" in a kindergarten classroom.

“You really need to look at the range of issues, because if a 5-year-old can’t sit still, it is unlikely that they can do well in a kindergarten class, and it has to be the whole range of issues that go into healthy child development,” Sebelius said during a telephone news conference on Wednesday to announce the Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge.

Sebelius and Education Secretary Arne Duncan jointly announced the $500-million program, which will provide competitive grants to states to address issues affecting educational outcomes for children from birth to age 5.  (The actual question needs to be why aren’t we helping mom’s be home with their young children; why aren’t more people home-schooling or moving their children to Christian schools and why would you want these people to have anymore effect on your children than they already do?  They have already proven that under the Progressive watch, education and knowledge is at an all time low and instilled propaganda against America, free-market Capitalism, religion and their parents is at an all time high!)

On the conference call, CNSNews.com asked: “What were the current problems that were found with the health, social and emotional development for children ages birth to 5?”

Sebelius, adding on to comments from Asst. Education Secretary Joan Lombardi, pointed to studies done in her home state of Kansas, where she served as governor. “When we looked at 5-year olds--and we tested about half the 5-year-olds in a relatively homogeneous state like Kansas -- and found that about half of them were not ready for kindergarten at age 5," Sebelius said.

"And some of those skills were missing: readiness for their math or reading," she said. "A number of children were missing the social and developmental skills which would allow them to sit in a classroom or play with others or listen to a teacher for any period of time. So I think it was an indicator that you couldn’t just test curriculum readiness.”

According to the U.S. Department of Education, awards in Race to the Top will go to “states that are leading the way with ambitious yet achievable plans for implementing coherent, compelling, and comprehensive early learning education reform.”

Religious ‘Candy Cane Case Ask:  Do Elementary Students Have First Amendment Rights?

The “candy cane case” may have serious implications for the First Amendment rights of elementary school children. This creatively-dubbed legal battle started back in 2003 when an elementary school in Plano, Texas, refused to allow children to distribute religious materials.

Jonathon Morgan, a third-grade student at the time, brought candy cane-shaped pens to share with his class. Administrators at the Plano Independent School District refused to allow him to distribute the pens, because they had religious messages attached. Back in 2001, another student’s party favors (pencils that said “Jesus is the reason for the season”) were also confiscated.  Read Full Article Here

Losing Our Kids: Tweens, LGBTIQ Role Models, You Do Not Need to Respect Old People, and Body Searches OK for 6- Yr-Olds… Really??

California Senate mandates homosexual role models for schoolchildren
Thomasson: "Parents don't want and children don't need 'LGBTIQ' role models"

Sacramento, California – With today's passage by the Democrat-controlled California State Senate of "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans" as mandatory role models for children as young as kindergarten, SaveCalifornia.com, a leading West Coast pro-family, pro-child organization is calling upon California parents to permanently remove their children from the government school system.

Today, the California Senate, on a 23 to 14 vote -- Democrats for, Republicans against -- approved what would be the 7th school sexual indoctrination law teaching children to view homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality as a good and natural lifestyle option. The vote comes the day before the disruptive "Day of Silence" in public schools, sponsored by the "Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network," which SaveCalifornia.com is urging parents to counter-protest by keeping their kids home this Friday.

SB 48 would mandate that history and social studies textbooks and instructional materials teach children to admire "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans" as role models. The proponents of the bill seem to have forgotten there are already six statewide school sexual indoctrination laws affirming homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality.
"This clear and present danger should motivate fathers and mothers to rescue their children from California government schools and take them to the safe havens of solid church schools and homeschooling," said Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com. "Parents don't want and children don't need 'LGBTIQ' role models in school, SB 48 is sexual brainwashing in the extreme. It's damaging and nonacademic to teach children a lie -- that homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality are natural and healthy lifestyles, when they’re not."

(Sources: NARTH: "Is There A 'Gay Gene?'"; American College of Pediatricians: "Health Risks of the Homosexual Lifestyle")

"SB 48 micromanages public schools by forcing teachers, administrators, local school boards, textbooks, and instructional materials to promote a gaggle of sexual lifestyles that disturb parents and confuse kids," Thomasson said. "This state mandate targets children for sexual brainwashing, behind the backs of parents, teaching boys and girls to admire those who engage in unnattural and unhealthy homosexual, bisexual, and transsexual behavior.

If SB 48 becomes law:
1. Textbooks and instructional materials must positively promote "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans" as "role" models.
2. Children as young as 6 years old will be taught to admire homosexuality, same-sex "marriages," bisexuality, and transsexuality (sex-change operations).
3. Children will be taught to support the political activism of "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Questioning" (LGBTIQ) political groups, as the bill requires "particular emphasis on portraying the role of these groups in contemporary society."
4. Teachers will be made to positively portray homosexuality, same-sex "marriages," bisexuality, and transsexuality (sex-changes operations), because to be silent can bring the charge of "reflecting adversely."
5. School boards will be required to select textbooks and other instructional materials that positively portray sex-change operations, same-sex "marriages," and more, because to be silent on these subjects opens them up to charges of "reflecting adversely."
6. Parents will not be notified, nor will they be able to exempt their children, from this new core curriculum.

"California government schools are no longer morally safe for impressionable children," Thomasson said. "Because of the raft of sexual indoctrination laws already in force, which promote homosexuality, bisexuality, and trans-sexuality under the guise of 'discrimination' and 'harassment,' the social engineers are already having their way with more than six million boys and girls, with or without SB 48. That's why we strongly urge loving parents to rescue their children by permanently removing them from government schools and placing them in the safe havens of church schools or homeschooling." (Source: RescueYourChild.com)

"We call on Governor Jerry Brown to have compassion, to respect parents, and to remember when public schools used to be good and didn't push sexual indoctrination," Thomasson said. "Now public schools aren't so good, yet homosexual activists are pushing their non-academic agenda without regard to parents or logic or the best interests of children. Governor Brown should prepare to veto this bad bill, which greatly disturbs parents, confuses kids, and flushes public schools farther down the toilet."

Resist the "tweening" of America

Every so often, my friend Jen posts a link on her Facebook page that I'm sure is intended to get a rise out of me. All she has to do is direct me to a news story about tweens.

Once, she found an article about the trend among tween girls to have professional hair treatments such as highlights, lowlights, chemical straighteners and permanent curls. Unlike the home treatments we may have had our moms do for us when we were teens, pre-teenagers today get their moms to plunk down $45 or more for a salon visit where they get streaks of color not found in nature.

According to the salon owner quoted in the article, girls as young as 6 sometimes come in for color streaks in their hair; though she admitted, "8 to 12 is more the norm." Later in the story, the truth behind this style trend revealed itself: Tweens are a powerful demographic spending group, so businesses such as hair salons are finding ways to get a piece of the tween pie.

Tweenhood is a phony phase

The tweening of America makes me crazy, and not just because I live with a daughter who sings pop songs in the bathroom and has a crush on America's current teen heart throb, Justin Bieber.

I understand stereotypically tween girl obsessions – lip-gloss, cute shoes, spiral notebooks with pictures of iCarley star Miranda Cosgrove – since these sorts of things are generally harmless and typical for pre-teen girls.

What bugs me about tweenhood as a bona fide life phase is, it's just phony. It was created by marketers to tap the vast pile of money to which tweens – those between the ages of 8 and 12 who formerly were known as "children" – now have direct access or at least direct influence.

Thanks to marketers, our children now experience something called "age compression" or KGOY, an acronym of the marketing trade that stands for Kids Getting Older Younger. This is the reason we see news headlines like one I saw a while back: "Ten is the new 15."
It works like this: Marketers get children hooked at an early age on the idea that they will be happier and more popular if they wear certain brands and have certain things. By the time they reach the ripe old age of 11 or 12, children are so savvy that they're understandably less interested in "childish" things (i.e. toys) and more interested in the things that make them cool (smartphones, laptops, make-up). At least, that's the opinion of one marketing guru who claims KGOY requires new strategies to meet the tween demand for new products and services.

Is this what our culture needs – a generation of pre-adolescents skipping their childhoods only to be immersed in a state of pseudo-adulthood? How will this result in a mature society?
