From the Reservation: Walking Eagle to UND

WALKING EAGLE

President BARACK OBAMA was invited to address
a major gathering of the American Indian Nation
two weeks ago in upstate New York.

He spoke for almost an hour about his plans for
increasing every Native American's present
standard of living. He referred to his time as
a U.S. Senator and how he had voted for every
Native American issue that came to the floor
of the Senate.

Although President Obama was vague about
the details of his plans, he seemed most
enthusiastic and spoke eloquently about
his ideas for helping his "red sisters and brothers."

At the conclusion of his speech, the Tribes
presented Obama with a plaque inscribed with
his new Indian name, "Walking Eagle."

The proud President Obama accepted the plaque
and then departed in his motorcade to a fundraiser,
waving to the crowds.

A news reporter later asked the group of chiefs
how they came to select the new name they had
given to the President.

They explained that "Walking Eagle" is the name given
to a bird so full of shit it can no longer fly.

Forcing Schools to Change their Mascots and Nicknames…. Really, That’s What They Have to Worry About?

The NCAA has told North Dakota University to drop UND's Sioux nickname and logo which they have had for since their inception. The North Dakota Board of Higher Education essentially told them to go fly a kite, but after and exhausting battle and a ban from their team(s) participating in the league and playoffs it seems that they are caving. The vote came after NCAA flatly told state officials that it won't accept the name because it is "hostile" and "abusive" to Indian people. The University of North Dakota faced sanctions for keeping the controversial symbol.

We have exhausted all avenues and we are now going to have to retire the nickname.” state board president Grant Shaft said, The Grand Forks Herald reported.

If I were and Indian or a tribe I would thrilled that we are/were remembered. This is not the first the NCAA and other like organizations have forced schools and even professional team to retire their nicknames, mascots and logos. The less someone hears of you, even in a fun way, the sooner you will be forgotten!!

Is this really what and where we’ve come to? As Herman Cain said the other day in the GOP Presidential debate, ...America needs to learn to take a joke… we need to get our sense of humor back!! Political Correctness and Multiculturalism are killing us! The have pitted us against each other, played the race card and divided us so we can’t even laugh or appreciate a mascot or tradition.

You can see that the Indians in the story above can take a joke! ;-) We all need to rent a copy of ‘Dirty Harry’s’ aka Clint Eastwood’s movie Gran Torino and both laugh and cry.

We really need to go back to appreciating our differences but also being able to laugh at each other and ourselves and to celebrating what we have in common!
