The Truth Has No Agenda… That Is Why It Will Set You Free

Beck drew up an anti-violence pledge after the horrific events in Tucson last weekend – the shootings of 16 people which included Congresswoman Giffords, a Federal Judge and a nine year old girl.

Glenn Beck Issues Challenge/Pledge of Non-Violence

Here goes that crazy guy spouting off his crazy nonesense again...
Read this in its entirety here.

This was written in response to the Tucson shootings. There's about 5 paragraphs before the quote begins. The quoted bit is the challenge/pledge and its intro. That's where I'd like to focus. Please don't spin this into a Glenn Beck hate echo chamber just because Beck's name is on it. Please focus on the content itself.

This tragedy should not be used as an opportunity to try and bend reality to retroactively place a madman on the other side of the aisle. It should be a time to pray for the victims and their families, a time that we can all come together and state that violence is off limits for all sides in a Republic. It’s a time for us to state with a unified passion that we won’t accept anyone who threatens or actually carries out violence.

Denouncing violence from all sides including your own does not make your movement any less just. To quote Martin Luther King:

But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

I challenge all Americans, left or right, regardless if you’re a politician, pundit, painter, priest, parishioner, poet or porn star to agree with all of the following.

  • I denounce violence, regardless of ideological motivation.
  • I denounce anyone, from the Left, the Right or middle, who believes physical violence is the answer to whatever they feel is wrong with our country.
  • I denounce those who wish to tear down our system and rebuild it in their own image, whatever that image may be.
  • I denounce those from the Left, the Right or middle, who call for riots and violence as an opportunity to bring down and reconstruct our system.
  • I denounce violent threats and calls for the destruction of our system – regardless of their underlying ideology – whether they come from the Hutaree Militia or Frances Fox Piven.
  • I hold those responsible for the violence, responsible for the violence. I denounce those who attempt to blame political opponents for the acts of madmen.
  • I denounce those from the Left, the Right or middle that sees violence as a viable alternative to our long established system of change made within the constraints of our constitutional Republic.
I will stand with anyone willing to sign that pledge. Today I make a personal choice. I urge leaders of both sides and all walks of life to join me as all Americans joined hands on 9.12.2001. I believe that we must change ourselves to hold on to our republic. That’s why I have been talking about e4. Enlightenment. Education. Empowerment. Entrepreneurship. It’s a personal solution for all of us to become the people we were born to be, not the people we’ve allowed ourselves to become. I have called for a personal revolution; change ourselves in order to change the world. Those who live with honor and are responsible to themselves and their families will be the key to the future of our Republic, not those playing political games.

A rather stark contrast from the other responses to the Tucson shootings, no?

Who here's willing to sign that pledge? I am. Are you? Who out there in the public, the media, and other places is? Let's see if we can keep track of who here, in the public, and in the media, says yes to this, and who dismisses it in cloud of Beck hate. That will be very telling about those people.

Again please focus on the CONTENT of the challenge/pledge and not Glenn Beck. Since I'm starting this thread, I'm going to openly call for the deletion of any random comment about Beck, i.e. "Glenn Beck is a hypocrite. Now he's calling for non-violence, but where was he when Palin made her crosshair map?", that does not focus on the content of this challenge/pledge. I hope the Mods here will support me with that. This isn't about Beck. This is about the challenge/pledge and ONLY the challenge/pledge. Please keep it to that.

Beck and his staff contacted almost all the Senators and Congressmen’s offices to ask them to sign the Pledge.  After 2-days only 14 had signed as of yesterday’s show.  Out of 100 Senators and 535 people in Congress. (The 111th Congress of the United States has 535 members consisting of 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 members of the Senate.)

only 14 had signed as of yesterday’s show.

Glenn made a very good point in his talk radio show yesterday. He wondered this question aloud during a break, and then it spilled over into the radio show. Here's that excellent commentary; it contains a warning. We are literally fighting for our future lives, and those of our children and grandchildren! If we fail to keep Talk Radio and the Internet telling us the truth, we'll fall for anything. If there is no real opposing voice, we'll be dependent upon our OWN efforts, including time, while we do our best to provide for, educate, and raise our families. And let's face it, not all of us can afford a 40-person research staff to ensure we're getting our facts straight each day.

Then there's the Internet. Let's not even go there. That's another discussion entirely. Here's the story from Glenn Beck's website:

Will talk radio survive the year?

With all the attempts to blame Glenn, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, and other conservative voices for the Arizona shootings, one starts to wonder if talk radio will survive the year. Pat asked Glenn that very question during a break, and the radio guys addressed the issue on the program.

Pat said he doesn’t think talk radio will continue after 2011. “Yeah, I mean, the way it’s going. It doesn’t look like it to me. I don’t know how we do. How do we survive the year? You’ve already got Clyburn calling for the Fairness Doctrine, you’ve already got Al Sharpton who started last year and wants to call Rush before some Senate committee hearing,” Pat said. “I mean, they are using a situation that has absolutely nothing to do with us, without a shred of evidence that he ever listened to anybody on the right, or the left.”

Glenn added that the slow regulation of the media is the textbook definition of progressivism. “It is bit by bit, step by step, it is progress,” he said.

When the Fairness Doctrine was in place decades ago, it nearly killed talk radio. “When the Fairness Doctrine was in force in, what, the Eighties, the way they did it was you’d have a conservative in the morning, then you’d have a liberal in the midday. Then in the afternoon there’s a conservative. Then at night there’s a liberal. And it kind of went like that on just about every station. And so you never knew what you were going to get when you tuned in unless you knew the schedule really well,” Pat said.

Glenn said that when they start applying the Fairness Doctrine to other industries, then maybe you can come to talk radio. “When there is the Fairness Doctrine in the universities, you let me know and you come to talk radio. When you have to have someone with the other opinion standing in front of your children, you let me know. See, they know exactly the power. They know exact ‑‑ they know. And they know the power of total indoctrination.”

“And if you don’t think this can happen, you’re fooling yourself. If you don’t think that they’re going to regulate the Internet, you’re just uninformed. And here’s why: They already did it December 21st. They’re now writing the regulations for the Internet. And nobody seems to care. Man has never been freer to speak his mind but yet there are so many of your friends that just think, ‘Well, this will always be this way.’”
