California: Please Urge Governor Schwarzenegger to Veto S.B. 242!

This is an urgent call alert!

S.B. 242 is a bill that amends California's civil rights laws to make language a protected civil right like national origin, sex, and race. Introduced by State Senator Leland Yee (D-8) the bill threatens to unleash a flood of civil rights lawsuits against private and parochial schools, professional associations, community organizations as well as individuals and employers who "discriminate" by failing to accommodate other languages.

In April, S.B. 242 passed the state senate with a vote of 21-15. Last Thursday it passed the Assembly with a vote of 48-27. It now heads to Governor Schwarzenegger's desk.

The California Chamber of Commerce opposed this bill and labeled the legislation a "job killer" that contains "vague terminology that will create uncertain new obligations for businesses." Assemblyman DeVore (R-Irvine) said "this is the last sort of thing we need to do - to put additional burdens on businesses."

We need your help! Please call Governor Schwarzenegger and urge him to VETO S.B. 242. Please TAKE ACTION NOW. Language is NOT civil right. PLEASE CALL NOW.
