Former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has formally resigned as governor of Alaska 17 months early.
Mrs Palin confirms her decision to stand down. What now?
She announced her intention to quit unexpectedly on July 3, leading to speculation she might bid for the presidency in 2012.
Mrs Palin, who has been dogged by a host of ethics probes, gave few clues about her political future although she promised to keep "championing Alaska".
"When I took the oath to serve you, I promised... to steadfastly and doggedly guard the interests of this great state like that grizzly guards her cubs. As a mother naturally guards her own," she said.
"And I will keep that vow wherever the road may lead."
Mrs Palin also took a swipe at the media, who she has accused of treating her and her family unfairly.
“I cannot express enough there is no plan after July 26. There is absolutely no plan.” …Palin family spokeswoman
"How about, in honour of the American soldier, you quit making things up?" she said to reporters at her good-bye in Fairbanks.
She added her replacement, Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell, "has a very nice family too, so leave his kids alone".
Mr Parnell, 46, has promised to pursue many of Mrs Palin's initiatives, including a controversial natural gas pipeline.
"We share the same core values," he told the gathering, adding he intended to focus on economic issues.
Mrs Palin after losing the election
Although Mrs Palin's next steps remain unclear, reports say she is working on an autobiography and could host a TV chat show.
Mrs Palin shot to fame as Republican John McCain's running mate in the election of November 2008, attracting both praise and criticism alike.
She said a major factor in her decision to quit as Alaska's governor was the mounting legal cost she and the state faced in fighting nearly 20 ethics cases.
The 45-year-old has insisted her opponents will not "find any dirt".
And now we wait for the next chapter.
Sarah Palin left her last official state twitter just hours ago:
“Last state twitter. Thank you Alaska! I love you. God bless Alaska. God bless the U.S.A.”
Critics have done all they can to obliterate her, yet she is not going away. Her favorability numbers continue to reflect a strong conservative support base. Don’t they realize that they more they persecute Sarah Palin with their lies and innuendo’s, the more the conservatives rise up? Perhaps they’re doing us a favor with their ridiculous attacks.
This stopped being about politics a long time ago; this is spiritual warfare. Sarah Palin has taken a strong stand against abortion and her opposition is unnerved. In fact, she would do an outstanding job as the head of the pro-life movement. For now, we’ll hold her in our prayers and wait to see where God leads her next.
